Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Thats Ok, VW and Porsche are nearly the same these days. Porsche is working on totally taking over VW (which includes Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Skoda, Bugatti and SEAT). Us 914 owners love the irony.

Ahh, I see it now... I don't regularly visit the lounge, which is why I failed to see it posted there...I felt the "Track" forum was a more appropriate venue for such a discussion. Sorry, I will try to visit ALL our forums before posting not-so-current current events in the future!! haha!!

I can't claim to be this smart on my own, so I will say I actually looked this stuff up. :)

Due to the Velvet Revolution in early 1990 (or so) Czech gov privitized a bunch of stuff including Skoda. They selected VW as their partner, so I think VW owns a controlling interest (not sure what percent).

SEAT was originally created with aid from Fiat. Fiat pulled out in 1981. VW stepped in later and by 1990 was 100% owner.

More details of the road to purchase...

http://jalopnik.com/cars/industry-news/ ... 313815.php

What makes this interesting in many ways is...

* Porsche (as an engineering firm) was in at the ground floor of the creation of VW. At the start, they were in effect the engineering department for VW and continued to do this for a number of years (until VW grew large enough to have their own).
* Porsche (the car company) basically build improved VWs (i.e. 356) that Porsche (the man) couldn't convince VW to make.
* At one point (1980's?) Porsche was in such bad shape if was felt they could be ripe for takeover. Including from VW.
* Porsche is now so well run and profitable they are able to aquire VW and complete the circle started years go.

True confessions: When I replaced my mini I thought for a minute about a Boxster. My understanding is that you can't put a functional roll bar in them and still operate the top. If and when used Caymens get to the Camry price rule (if something costs less than an new Camry it is then deemed practical) then I will have a real decision on my hands.

I do like your Camry plan....give it a couple years and your Porsche dreams will all come true.
