Hey gang,

Thought I would share my in-car from the TT on Saturday. Turn 5 was slick as snot all weekend, but I delt with it as best I could. Turn 7 was trying to kick my ass every lap going over the transition as well. Guess that is part of what makes Rockingham so fun.

Downloading now... can't wait to see it Jeff. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought 5 was slick. I sure hope someone got some in-car from behind me... I want to see how my drift practicing went :D Sure felt fun!!

I'll have some in-car of my own soon... just need to process and upload

That's really cool! Thanks for sharing. I want a shifter like that.

BTW,
you should have heard some of the words out of Stacy's mouth when he realized the camera wasn't on during his best session.

Here's my in-car from Sunday's time trial, group 2.

Looks a bit less dramatic on video, but note how many times I'm counter-steering through and out of T5 and T7 (sometimes T3).

Edit: Using MyLaps.com... Lap #9 was my fastest TT lap at 1:14.09x

My fastest of the weekend appears to have been during the last DE session on Sunday where I recorded a 1:13.96x

I'm tickled pink to be only @2.5 seconds off Matt Nicholson's times

And now for something completely different (or at least slower  ) -

Entertaining only for the Porsche-harassment, and the lesson learned about the curbs at around 6:30 in. Maybe send that to Scott for a "greatest hits" video?

Jeff to answer your question about entry into 7 go back and look at your shift points after you pass the red BMW (around 10:30 into the video). You entered turn 7 from about mid track. I'm betting the shift points aren't very different then when you enter turn 7 from further track right.

If I'm correct then you don't loose anything by entering from left of center track which means that if you carry enough speed through 6 so that the car needs to drift center track on exit you don't loose and speed down the front straight.

That said....if for ANY corner your wheels actually were pointed in the direction of the corner for the whole turn things may have been faster! What were you running, roller skates on the back??

Great times in the TT.

Stacy nice video. A couple comments. It appears you kind of hedge in a bit for turn 5 (second half of fish hook). Next time try staying full track left before turning in for 5. That should help your exit.

Also, for turn 7 its hard to hear the engine over the wind noise but when the car starts to slide exiting 7 try modulating the throttle some (small quick lifts) to keep it from sliding so much. And if the banking catches you and stops the slide don't go any higher onto the banking until WELL onto the front straight. I don't go up on the real front straight until just at or maybe just before the start finish line. With momentum cars like yours and mine the less climbing you do and the straighter you make your exit out of 7 the faster you will be!

I'm not sure these tips will be enough for you to catch Matt (his car is faster) but they should help close the gap a little!

Actually, caster wheels is more like it...and tell that to Jim Clark and all those guys who used to drive those old F1 cars on bias-ply tires... :D

Back to T7 - Getting into 7 from center track did not hurt me *that* much, but it did make for an awkward transition and you can see the car get upset by it. My physics book tells me that if I have to travel on a tighter arc, given the same amount of grip, then I am going to have to go slower to do it. Now weather or not I am good enough to capitalize on that while driving is a whole 'nuther story. I figure that if I know this, then I should give myself every opportunity to capitalize from it weather I can get there with driving or not. For me the track out of 7 ends about 6 inches before the apron ends. I just can not bring myself to slam a car up onto the banking at that speed.

You know me Ron, I tend to try and drive the tidy line that technically makes the most sense. Of course, after watching the pros on TV, it is easy to see that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I will try that next time...

I'm not so sure the TT video was a good example of my T7 technique (I was very inconsistent there all weekend anyway.) There were more than a couple laps where I pushed it through 6, which threw me off for 7. Like Jeff said, the tighter arc is where the rear end wanted to come around on me, even in 3rd gear there.

As far as the apron/oval transition there... I've found a very nice, smooth spot that doesn't upset the car, and still keeps the line tight enough that I don't think it's detrimental. Only time I immediately get up on the banking is when I'm letting someone by or I've really blown T7.

The inside line through T7 can only put you on the banking quicker unless slowing way down in the turn. I felt best with a fast T6, braking hard then turning in for T7 center track and allowing the car to drift out gradually to the transition and naturally (i.e. no addt'l steering input) straddle, then move up onto the banking (well past where Danny and Mark O were moving up onto it last year.)

I know Matt and Mike had some very close battles, I can only hope to not embarrass myself... plus, now that Matt has taken a hit off of some Hoosiers, anyone in DSP will have their work cut out for them LOL.

Jeff the deal with 6 is that if you want to enter turn 7 classically, you would need to be full track right exiting 6. To do that you have to give up a LOT more speed through 6. However if you carry lots more speed through 6 it will indeed mean you have to let the car drift left to maybe center track, maybe further.

However I've found even with the less then classic entrance to 7 I can still carry lots of speed through 7. The key to exiting 7 is to let the car drift as far right as it wants/ needs. The transition from apron to banking will usually keep the car from sliding further. Its not hard on the car but does stop the slide quickly.

If you combine all these things together you can carry speed all the way through both those turns and not suffer a penalty down the long front straight. Whenever I catch a car in 6 I never loose ground to them out onto the NASCAR portion. Or if I do its only because I have to slow my momentum down so I don't hit them!

Jeff its a LOT like turn 4 at Roebling. My goal there is the same as for 6 at The Rock: exit on pavement. I still carry lots of speed through 5 even though I'm entering it from center track or further track left.

In any event something to think about for next time there.

Ron
