Absolutely not. In fact I NEVER get anywhere near the right edge of the track in 6. Sometimes when I've really carried speed through 6 I'm at the gators on the left edge! Usually I'm exiting turn 6 center track. Let the car settle, brake and turn in for 7 still apexing at the last water barrell where we put the cone.

Ron - If you guys were to ever get that traqmate to work...it would be real easy to see if one way is better than the other and why...

True. But the data I do have (lap times) give me a pretty good idea. Last year I turned a 1:09.75. This year before it got really hot the best lap was a 1:10.1 ( I think). Not too bad for what the car is.

I take that section the same way as Ronl. IMO (which could be wrong) if you have a low HP you need to keep all the speed you can get thru T5. Doing that will put you full track left for T6. If you have high HP and can blast of of T6 thru T7 then staying more track right at T6 makes sense. IOW, I'll be slow exiting T6 anyway so why not carry as much speed as I can getting there?

Here's a video of me driving Kendt's SVT Focus.

I am still surprised to hear that low HP guys are willing to start the longest straight on the track with less exit speed. And you can't argue that you are getting the same exit speed with that line if you are getting 100% out of the car.

FWIW, I ran the same line through T6 in my CRX as the Locost and turned a 1:10.xx That was my first day ever at the Rock with that car (or ever for that matter), and I did not go back with it, so I have nothing to compare it to. I felt certain that with more seat time there, I could have gone better. But really it is apples and oranges unless the contions are real close.

Data Logging really could reveal all the right answers...

Edit...CRX video for reference:

Jeff the whole point is I'm NOT giving up any speed onto the long front straight. WE can debate it all day. I had this same kind of debate about the sweeping turn through VIR 2 to 3 vs the straighter line. On paper the straighter line would seem to be the fastest but in experience its not. My advice would be to ask around to the low horsepower guys and see which line they take through 7. I KNOW Oscar and I take the same line. And typically he's no slouch at the track.

I think the biggest variable is that there is almost infinite track out available out of 7. I don't use much as the banking will stop any slide out of it but typically I don't have to have it do that. My question Jeff is have you tried the line I'm talking about? I've tried the line you are referring to (and will next time to re-verify) but I found it to be slower.

Now the thing that makes me scratch my head is why folks go up on the banking early. Unless the car slides that far out of 7 it makes, to me, NO sense to take the time and energy to climb the banking until you have to to get lined up for NASCAR 1. My goal out of 7 is to drive as straight a line as possible which means I apex at the grass and don't come onto the banked front straight until the start finish line. Almost EVERYONE else is mid track by then. Why? It only makes it longer....

Yes you turned a 1:10 you first time there. And yes I'd expect there to be more there because you drive very well.

Good to have different points of view......

Like I said before...there probably is more than one way to skin a cat. It is good to have healthy discussions about the finer details sometimes.

I am off to Summit for the weekend. I am going to try and see if I can get some more time by staying more to the middle of the track at the entrance to T10. :nana:

Jeff I really don't think our lines are that much different through T7. I recall from watching your Locost video that i could see quite a bit of track to your right on the short straight before 7 which means you're not turning in from full track right.

On Summit in all the cars I've ever driven there it pays dividends to use the curbing at the top of the shoot (before turn 5) to throw the car track left going down the shoot. Its another turn where entering from mid track was fine. I found that my speed down the shoot was limited by my ability to slow the car down enough for T5. Using the curbing to throw the car left meant it got settled in a straight line early so I could brake.

Turn 3 at Summit is one of my favorite turns. Blazingly fast and certainly more so in your rocket ship!

Have fun and hope the new pavement holds up. that would be a first for SP! And also hope they didn't just pave over the old ruts and actually ground the track smooth then paved it.
