Kudos once again to Mark, Stacy and the entire track team for an OUTSTANDING event this weekend.

I can even say that I had a blast even after blowing the motor up in my Miata.

CMP is a tough track and the grip seemed a bit tough to find. With the proposed upgrades, I think that place could become a spectacular track.

Look forward to going back again next year!!!

+1

Thanks THSCC for another super event. First trip to CMP for me, and I really enjoyed it. The heat was rough and got to me enough yesterday that I packed it in early and headed home before I did something stupid. I will be back though. I too am looking forward to the improvements to the track in the future.

Hell yeah. CMP was a good time. Of course out of the 3 HPDEs I've done in my life, 2 of them had been here. And it was still fun to me. The heat was made much more bearable thanks to me lucking into Graham's old Fandamonium spot. 4 EZUPs and a person to fan ration of about 1.5 to 1 makes Kershaw, SC almost pleasant in August.

Even though my rear brake pads crapped the bed for me and stopped me from going out for my third session on Sunday. I still had a great time.

Thanks to the small army I'm sure it takes to pull these things off. I'll be back next year, but hopefully in March!

I guess I was a little luckier and found out before I headed down on Friday :-)

I hated to miss CMP. It is a fun track. But chances are the car would have made one lap before exploding parts all over. And the run group would be pretty pissed off.

Ohhh I don't mind sharing at all.

Ran all day Friday, 5 sessions, ran like a top.

On the 3rd session of Saturday, coming out of T8, I shift to 4th and as I step back onto the gas the pedal goes limp, some minor bad noises ensue. I had ZERO throttle control. The throttle was just enough to limp back in. It gets to just barely off the grid and dies.

So I hop out and take a look. Once again I snapped a throttle body shaft and the throttle cable and 1/2 of the shaft are sitting about 6" from the throttle body. So I stick the 1/2 of the shaft back in and start it up. REALLY bad noises at anything above and idle. So I shut it down and I got pushed to paddock.

I take the intake hose off and look, there are supposed to be 2 rivets holding that shaft to the plate. I can only account for 1, the other is I am guessing in the #1 cylinder because the #1 spark plug is covered in oil.

I am weighing my options at this point. Putting another 1.6 in is kinda like kissing your sister. My wife wants me to part the car out and get something else. I honestly dont know what I am gonna do at this point. We are going on vacation this week, so I have some time to let the dust settle and go from there.

This weekend was rough on alot of cars. Vincent had transmission troubles, Stacy blew his headgasket and lots of cars overheated.

Ouch. Sorry to hear of your troubles-- I hope everything gets resolved without too much trouble.

Second time? I've never heard of a Miata doing that but I haven't been paying much attention for some time. Is that a common failure at this point? If so, are there any warning signs or does it just let go?

Yeah, 2nd time. I snapped it at VIR, T14 where the throttle stuck OPEN!!!!

I have heard of it but I don't think it is "common". I have looked at my linkage and it does not appear to be banjo tight.

The rod looks like its copper so that does not help much either.

It was really freaking hot. Fortunately a few friends with 4 tents and half dozen fans made it bearable. Otherwise I don’t think I could have stood it. On Friday it was hot enough that I had to run shorter sessions just to keep the car’s temps under control. When the oil temp reached 250 and the water 230 it was time to quit. We rested the cars for an hour then headed back out. I ran five sessions in my car and one in Bernie’s Vette. 8) Plenty of open track time for one day. No trains or anything. It was really nice.

The facilities at CMP are OK, but not nearly as nice as VIR. They need improvements, but that is in the near future from what we were told by the new owners. IMO, the track itself is fun from T1 thru T10. T11 thru T14 needs to be bulldozed because it just plain sucks. Four 90 degree (or more) corners blows goats….especially in FWD car. There is nothing at all I can say good about that section. As a matter of fact I pretty much just putted around it unless someone was right behind me. T8 was my favorite followed by the kink (T10). Both of those are fast and fun. Though my car doesn’t really like the carousel portion (T5-T7), it didn’t suck too bad. The track surface is pretty abrasive and it is hard on tires similar to Rockingham. The outer gators must have been designed to eff up a car is all I can think off. I took others advice and steered clear of them all weekend. Jim Poole driver in a Miata did not and screwed his front alignment big time as he slammed them into T5. I hope those things will get redone thank goodness.

Everything was fine on my end Friday (brakes, tires, etc) until my first session on Saturday. About three fourths of the way thru the tranny didn’t want to go into 4th without putting serious effort on the shifter itself. After the session I put the car on ramps just to check the fluid level and see if there was anything amiss. Upon crawling under notice a perfectly spiraled piece of aluminum sticking out between the tranny and engine. There is a small plastic shield that covers the flywheel and it was protruding from there. I’m not expert, but pieces of metal usually ain’t too good. I decided to park the car for the remainder of the weekend to prevent further damage which may keep me from getting home. In the past I would have been pretty bummed about the car, but I have a backup one to get me to work and back so no big deal. It’s just a car and I’ll get it fixed like I always do somehow.

My student Spratte offered me a session in his MCS which was cool. It does everything pretty well on track for a decent, but not spectacular car. For a stock car, the body roll isn’t too bad and the brakes did OK…nowhere near my brakes, but still OK. The brake pedal travel was far greater than mine which prevented me from do a decent H-T though. Thanks again to David (and Bernie) for letting me flog their cars.

Even with my car problems I had a great time. We had plenty of laughs at dinner thanks to Spratte. Good friends and cars, and I made it home just fine. A damn fine weekend. Thanks again to the THSCC/TZC staff and crew for another great weekend.

Thanks for the kind words guys!! Thanks to you all who came out and had fun Friday with me... I really appreciated it, and I think everyone got along swimmingly!

I got about 45 minutes of seat time in Friday morning before my brakes started to fade, so as I was on a cool down lap, all excited about switching to HT10s all around, we rounded T13 and all of a sudden the car dropped a cylinder. Rough running, bad vibration. Parked it, then spent the next few hours trying to figure out what was going on. We knew I wasn't running on all cylinders, but for some reason, it took us until after lunch to figure out which one (#1). For a short time we thought the car was only running on 3 out of 6, and thought a bad distributor was the culprit... but a bright flashlight and some sharp eyes caught the gasket material sticking out into the #1 cyldiner.

Thanks SO much to Rob Harvey for getting me to Fayetteville (man that A/C in his car works good!). We had a nice meal at Ruby Tuesday's waiting for the AAA tow truck. As soon as it got there, we got a nice little rain shower (which after two days in 100 degree weather felt pretty good I must say!). I ended up having to pay the driver another $60 since we went over the 100 mile limit, but it was worth it to get back home and not have to find another way from the Triangle to New Bern.

My car will be rebuilt, and back running like it should (this explains the over heating and sluggish performance over the last few events!) so MAYBE I can contend in DSP during the time trials at Rockingham :D

FWIW... here are the time trial results from Saturday:

First, let me give the event staff a huge pat on the back. Terrific job you folks did in the face of sweltering heat. While I was relaxing in "tent city" with no less than four fans blowing on us you folks were standing out in the heat to keep us running smoothly, It did not go unnoticed, Thanks guys.
I'm glad to read that even with all the break downs, heating problems, brake problems and tire troubles we all still had a good time inspite of the heat, I know I did. I really like the track even the autocross section, it would be great if that section was faster but everyone has to drive it so its equal for all of us. the KINK was my favorite with turn 8 a close second, the carousel comes next. I've just been going thru the Traqmate data and my best times were on Friday, because of the clear track I'm sure, 157.975 I had thought that breathing the throttle at 105 just before entry to the kink was going to lead to a +100 Mph turn, but the best my GPS said was 97. (couldn't divert my line of sight even a fraction of an inch to glance at the HUD at that speed). Had a great time just sittin around in tent city shootin the breeze with everyone that took refuge there, great company, great weekend. Lets do it again guys

How 'bout that free water huh?! ;)

I think we did pretty good... used 57 bags of ice over the course of three days in two convenience store ice tubs.

Not sure about the total number of bottled water consumed, but it was well in excess of 300... probably closer to 500 (I think between all the campers, we had over 600 bottles of water) LOL

Thanks to a handful of sponsors who pitched in to help pay for that, and thanks to the campers for agreeing to bring cases of water in lieu of paying the club for the camping fee. I think it worked out really well, and we will do it again if we can.

The water was great! I partook (?) of it each day and was very thankful.

Stacy - I assume Mark was there taking pictures again?
