I spent this past Thurs-Sun at Roebling Road at the double drivers school for SCCA club racing. I had a blast and the weather couldn't have been better. We had 6 hours of track time (more than 250 miles in the race car).
The weekend was jam packed with on track sessions. Basically it was run for 20 minutes, then break for 40, then run again for 20, rinse - repeat - All day long. The beginning sessions were full course yellow. Then they would switch to one corner not yellow, the rest yellow. Then a series of 3 corners green and the rest yellow, etc. You had to pay attention. The biggest OOOPS point of the weekend was when the open cockpit guys were on track for there second session of the weekend. This is the session where it started full course yellow, then they opened up the front straight for passing (green). A driver in a brand new Radical got to the front straight saw that it wasn't yellow and decided to really accelerate hard. His cold tires broke loose and he shot very quickly into the wall that separates pit lane from the front straight. He trashed three corners of his car on his first green flag straight he ever drove that car on.
There were many cars going home with severe damage to them. One pile up on the front straight during a red flag ruined three cars, another metal to metal involving two spec miatas was a pretty heavy impact in turn 5. Then there were several single car incidents as well. Luckily my car and I performed as well as could be expected. I was the 6th fastest qualifying time out of 15 ITA cars this weekend, so not too bad for a car that is basically a SSC car still.
Saturday and Sunday each ended with 2 practice starts and a 5 lap race. You basically needed to finish both races to earn a passing grade.
I passed - yay. Now, I need a nap!
