FYI.. I am going with the Axxis Ultimates (lower price won out) and will have the current pads (maybe 1/2 worn) as spares.

Thanks for all of the info. I am also planning on bringing extra fluids (brakes, transmission and engine), tools to swap pads, bleed brakes and a handful of other tasks.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Well, they where really free. I received them Saturday. That company, BHP, is mainly doing Porsche, but I think they want to open up to other car. We will probably start to hear more about that company and there product in the future.

Anyone seen this? I wonder if it is worth following up on.

Richard:

If your OEM pads are holding up well autocrossing, I would bet they
would be fine for your first ever track event, at VIR-F , in Feb, with
a spare set in reserve.

If you do notice some fading and excellerated ware, I would recommend
the PFC street pad (Autozone sells them) as a reasonable priced
upgrade. They meet all your requirments.

I think this guy is a vendor on NASIOC - he mentioned he carries more than Subaru pads. Per the feedback there, appears to know his stuff, and carries more than pads (SS lines, etc...). I have no personal experience with him.

Figured I'd post here since it pertains to brakes and I didn't want to start yet another brake pad thread.

I've got a track only e30. Planning on getting HAWK Blues.
My questions are these...
Is it OK to use stock rotors?
Should I get something more expensive? (Like is Cryo worth it?)

Do I need to put Blues on the rear at the same time?

TIA,
Keith

I use NAPA, $26 rotors on my C5. So do many of the guys. The rotors are going to crack anyway doing track so why buy fancy rotors. And the cryo thing from everything I have heard so far is it's pointless. Just make sure whatever rotors you do use have been bedded in with your race pads ahead of time. That way you have the pad material transferred and they have been thermal cycled at least once.

Instead of putting your money into expensive rotors I'd say put your money into brake ducts. All the way down to the spindles if possible.

Stick with OEM supplier rotors like Brembo and Balo. My favorite sources are theultimategarage.com and Black Forest. BF will probably have better prices.

I had some bad experiences with the Chinese $18 rotors from Advance/Autozone. Developed huge cracks much faster than the good brands. Big enough that it could have started catching the pad.

For the fronts, I was never a big fan of Hawk blues but I love HT-10s. On the rear, I found the Axxis Ultimates to be great dual-purpose rear pads, didn't have to change from auto-x to track. Wear rate was good and rotor friendly. Blues will eat your rear rotors.

Absolutely - I've been using nothing but stock rotors on my cars all these years.

Don't put Blues on the rear, *especially* if you don't have ABS. You can do it if you have ABS, but if you don't you will likely get premature rear lockup at a most unfortunate time. You can just run stock pads on the rear, or some high performance street / autocross compound.

This is all great info! Thanks Guys.

One last thing,
I've got ATE rotors on the front with 2 track weekends on them.
They've got tiny/micro sized cracks all over the surface, from what you all are saying is that this is normal?
How much life can I get out of them before I replace them, or is this the sign that they need replacing right away?
And I should just expect to do this every few events?

I ran the last PCA event with micro cracks. But had a backup pair of rotors waiting. The very least, have a set of rotors with you. Actually, I would replace them now and not at the track this early in the season.

I can get 3 weekends out of a set of front rotors without ducting and two weekends out of the front pads. I hope to fabricate some Home Depot ducting over the next couple of weekends. The 1LE rotors are stupid expensive and the Ferodo pads are not cheap ($135).

FYI

I agree the made in China ones warp and /or crack quick. I get my rotors from NAPA only. Through back tracking part numbers and casting numbers in the rotors. The NAPA blanks (no name, white cardboard box) are actually Raybestos, made in Canada. I can go to Carquest and buy the exact same rotor, but in a pretty Raybestos box, for more than twice the price... For about $120 I get all 4 rotors, including tax. One of the few parts that I get that doesn't come with the "Corvette Tax"!
