See if you can talk Mark Musser into selling his '89 240SX when he finishes rebuilding the motor. I'd love to have that car with the SR-20DET motor dropped in it...

There's always the E30 3-series BMW like Whitney's car. Great chassis, good aftermarket, large knowledge base of folks who track them.

For a cheap track car, there are tons of A2 Golfs for practically nothing, and the go fast parts are pretty cheap and abundant. I'm sure Maurice Parker could help in the location and buildup of a good A2.

I will have to agree with Dick on Mustangs, though. There is no cheaper, more reliable "fast" car. Getting it to stop well might be the biggest problem on track.

We will gladly help you spend your money...

Even though the brake to speed ratio isn't the best, thanks to modern brake pads, even the stock GT brakes aren't too bad. They are a LOT better than the disc/drum combo on my 1988 5.0 Mustang. I ran Carbotech Panthers back in 2001 at VIR south course and had no problems. In fact it seemed that I had better brakes than at least one C4 Vette. I did need to replace the rotors due to some cracking/checking and the pads were almost gone. Even Z06 Vettes seem to be able to destroy rotors at track events though. Maybe Matt Nicholson will comment on the various potential cars and what Carbotech Pads can do for them.

Well... I'm not really considering a "muscle car." Looking for something no bigger/heavier than the Impreza, with about the same power (180hp, 2800lbs). The reason I'm thinking about rwd is that Subarus are too easy to go fast in. All you do is brake, turn, floor the throttle. You can do all kinds of crazy stuff in the 2.5RS that will immediately have you pointing in the wrong direction in say, a BMW 325is. While drifting through a corner with your foot on the floor is lots of fun, I think it would benefit me as a driver to also have something that requires a little more finesse. (Plus, I really enjoyed the throttle steer I experienced with Mike's BMW.) But I don't want to jump from 180hp awd to 300hp rwd - that wouldn't be very safe for the rest of you...

Any more suggestions?

Supercharge a Miata? Probably not 180 HP, but it doesn't weigh 2800lbs either...

As you know the list of low-moderate hp RWD cars is pretty short.

On top of that, their popularity is going up and finding one at a steal is getting increasingly difficult.

I would talk to Mark about his 240sx. It doesn't have 180hp, but that shouldn't be too difficult to reach. Especially if you're going to be inside the engine anyway.

You could also try to get ahold of Shultz and see where he found his bmw. I think he got a good deal on that.

Local source for old BMWs and parts - Bret Luter. I think Bret is still a club member, and he's a heck of a nice guy. I believe Matthew Thompson has visited the farm several times for his E30 buildup. The good and bad about an E30 is that you'll never be the only one on track... Personally, I love them. I almost bought one in '02.

Not to toot my own horns and such, but there is also the older Z cars. Great TQ for a older engine and only 2000-2400 lbs depending on year and options.

Many years ago I had two Really fun little "throw around cars". One was an RX4, the other was a TE55 Corolla SR-5 with a 2T-G Engine. Both were a blast to fling around.

I also agree with the 5.0 Cobra's. They have a HUGE aftermarket support system

I was actually thinking about Z cars this afternoon. I'll have to look into those, too.

What about something like this:

Would I be asking for trouble, or would that work out pretty well?

Personally, I think you need one of these:

Killer Vette

And just think, no need to tow a trailer since you can put everything in back!

I want to 2nd the fact Bret is a nice guy with good E30 resources. He hooked me up with a good deal on a driveshaft and I am buying a used hood and trim stuff from him soon. If you are into E30s and havent been to "the farm" you need to go. :D

Hey, I used to race one of these: MiniCup

Every time somebody asks me what I used to race (besides karts) and I respond with MiniCup, I get funny looks. Come to think of it, I get funny looks with most of my answers to questions but that isn't really relevant here... :P

Anyway, I ran one of these for about 4 years and won the Southeast MiniCup Championship twice. Not exactly what you're looking for but I had a blast with it. The only thing I don't miss about racing them was the long hauls to the various tracks we ran on.

Jim

Kevin,
An "older" Z car could be a good choice but the weight is probably more than noted above unless you strip it. My 1974 260Z weighed over 2500 lbs without driver. A 240 would be a little lighter and a 280 somewhat heavier. They are nice simple cars except for the stock carbs or fuel injection on the 73's and newer. The problems may be rust after all these years. The brakes are nothing special by today's standards (small front discs, rear drums). The engines generally last a long time in stock condition (like over 200,000 miles) but things like water pumps, alternators, and starters don't last forever. Ditto for clutches (and I was very easy on the clutch.) I loved my 260Z (learned how to autocross with it and did rather well).

So many choices. A lot of your decision (other than the basic "how much to spend") will depend on how much you are prepared to work on the car to get it reliable and to maintain it.
