I looked over the forums and didn't see an answer to my question, so here it is. I'm going to be running my first track event at the Rock on Nov 4-5. I'm currently running a set of Hawk HPS pads on all 4 corners. Is this adequate or do I need to consider bumping up to a more track worthy pad like Hawk blues?

I'd appreciate any feedback you have.

Thanks

That's a pretty heavy car. I would at least go to something a little more aggressive and make sure you have very good fluid in there. - AB

As for fluid, running recently fresh blue, so I'm comfortable there. What pads would you recommend? I've been looking at the prices of the blues and I'm surprised at their cost. Wasn't expecting to shell out $300 for a set of pads.

recommendations????

FWIW...

There's only one corner requiring very hard braking from any kind of high speeds, T3 (entry into infield). I can't imagine having issues with brakes at The Rock.

OCTJMO, ICBW...

First event, in Green group, HPS or OEM Pagid/Jurid/Textar should be fine. The difference in braking requirements between your first event and your fourth/fifth/sixth are profound -- not so much your driving abilities, but the fact that you will probably have several "breaks" in traffic which really reduce the heat in the braking system.

For events 2-4 or so, I still think OEM brands are the way to go. After that, call up Carbotech or a Hawk vendor.

Stock E36 brakes are well sized for the car.

You will be fine with the Hawk HPS pads for your first event. If you have another set of stock pads, toss them in the tool box.

I have upgraded to Ferodo DS3000 pads on the front, but still run the HPS on the rear. My brake pad budget is going to approach the tire budget.

Bring some spares just in case you need them.

Definately bring extra pads. I couldn't run my final run group at my first event because I had chewed through the pads already. It sucks to have to watch everyone else have fun while you sit on the sidelines.

As for other pads. I used the HPS and the HP+ on the Mustang. The HP+ survived a HPDE and a season of autocross before I had to replace them.

Excellent feedback...thanks.

I'll take your collective advice and bring an extra set of pads with me.

Rodney for every car I have run track events with (and even the few races I've done) I've only put real (read track pads) in the front. Always used stock pads for the rear. My thinking is that the rears do very little braking so why bother with real pads. In the 15 years I've been doing this I've never been disapointed. I did try real pads in the rear on the Talon once and really found no benefit.

And yes, to be redundant, bring at least some stock pads as extras so you have something to drive home on.

See you at The Rock!

Ron

Where do you get the Ferodos.Their DS-11s were the ONLY pads I was able to have any success with on my IMSA RS Opel sedan. Not too hard on the rotors, as were many full mettalics, but not too soft, just enough metal to last longer than anything eles. I seldom if ever see Ferodo mentioned these days...

Another 10-4 on the spares, I didn't think to mention that as it is so automatic with me.

TIA,

Steve

just for one more data point, i've ran VIR twice on stock BMW pads and they were fine.

But 'just' fine, now that i've played w/ 'real nausia inducing' track pads :P

When you do get some track pads I would stay away from the hawk blues. They eat rotors and combination of dust from the pad and iron from the rotor will turn rust colored and bond to the wheel if the dust gets wet. You cannot get it off without damaging the wheel finish. That's how the wheels you got from Jeff look the way they do now.
