I am carrying 5th gear through the climbing esses and down shifting for south bend. I tried or was forced to carry 4th, but was all over the limiter for too long.

The climbing esses are a lot of fun. They remind me the most of autocross but at a stupid fast speed. Quite frankly, if you are looking down at your speedometer you are not going fast enough through them

I could have lived without thinking that the worker at south bend might be snoozing....that would never happen, would it?

I saw my first yellow flag in that particular section at the station on the right before South Bend last Sunday. I caught it in my peripheral just before I looked left at the South Bend station who was waving the yellow as well. A car had spun, but had made it back on track by the time I arrived. I'm so glad those folks were there and on the job.

Slightly better than 120whp in a 2850 lb car, I guess... :P

I'm not sure whether I was going flat out through the uphill esses now. I remember that after I rode with Matt in his SER, I stopped pausing near the top of 4th gear and began taking them in 5th. But I can't remember if I eased up somewhere - I'm thinking I was easing up in the last right so that I could be far enough over before making the left through South Bend. Since somebody mentioned it, I remember that at some point I was too far over to the left there, but I can't remember if it was from turning early or from sliding due to too much speed. So I don't remember if I adjusted speed or just avoided making the error from then on.

I am sure he didn't mean to get so many of me... it just so happens I snuck into the frame when the corvette and cobra were driving by the camera.

Maybe those pictures were from the third session on Sunday that I missed due to my leaky P/S hose. :(

I'm replacing that hose tonight, along with wheel bearing number 4,953. I should be good to go for The Rock though.

I'm also thinking Matt was hitting at least 110 or so with his SE-R. Maybe I need to go do another HPDE on Full Course to refresh my memory...

It's been a while since I've done the uphill esses in the dry, but my recollection is I reach for 5th before I enter the esses to avoid the rev limiter somewhere near the top of the last one. I generally maintain 115-117 (mostly a guess. As Jim indicated I'm WAAAAY too busy to actually look at the speedo) through there and brake to ~90 for south bend. I certainly could manage a few mph more if I had to with fresh Hoosierdaddies, but 90ish is fast enough for me in a driving school.

I have heard unconfirmed rumors of ITC Civics on Hoosiers being able to do that turn with a slight lift only. I can't imagine how soiled my underwear would be after that....

I've seen the mph a few times since I can have it displayed in the HUD high enough on the windshield. For some areas it is nice to see if my mph is higher taking different lines.

I've only had 1 incident coming into South Bend. I came in hotter than I normally would. Did a brake tap and started my turn in a little too early. The back end started trying to pass the front end mid turn. I was almost sideways going down the hill. Managed to recover the car but I don't think I want to do that again...

The worker was awake and must have slowed down the traffic behind me. So no one caught up with me the painful way. The thought of the worker being asleep at the turn and finding another car there waiting for you is not a good thought to have.

that might be bad for a green student....but there is nothing wrong with entering the uphill esses full track left...i've done it many, many, many times without any adjustment to speed...only slight line adjustment is needed, go up over the curbing a little so you can still hit the same apex point...

reasons for entering the uphill esses full track left: defending your position in a race, completing a late pass in race or a DE...

as far as braking for T10, there is no way in hell i can make it through there without braking when i'm at speed (so add me to the list Ron  )...i'm typically doing 123-125 at the top of the esses then brake and downshift for south bend...

This was her very first HPDE and she was in a very fast car. Add those two factors in with dropping a wheel off the left side gator and you get a recipe for disaster IMO.

Only at 100mph eh? Regardless of what the speed might be (unless you are arriving at turn 10 on a riding lawn mower at 5mph!) you will have to either brake a little or lift.....A LOT. Like Bowie pointed out as did Matt and Mike, if you are hustling up the uphill esses you will have to brake for this turn.

In my little Honda I am flat from my turn in for 4 all the way up the uphill esses to turn 10. I HAVE to brake each and every time for 10. Now in a race, with something really important on the line (like say, money) I may, just may try it with a lift to win. But only then and there is no guarantee of success. And like Mike said I too often have to fight to find a place to get straight and back over to track right to enter 10.

Lets tally the results: people that say braking is needed: Matt, Mike, Bowie, myself

People that say it can be taken flat:.......anyone?

You choose which list to be on:)

R

I like Vincent am flat on the floor coming out of T5 and shift to 4th usually at T6a. then I don't lift until i tap the brake at South Bend (unless I am catching some slow Vette or Mustang).

I love SB. It is the funest corner on the track. My two favorite track spots is the downhill esses at Road Atlanta and the uphills at VIR. (with 106HP, there are not too many straits that make my list)

Fixed that for you, Robbie.

Anyone who prefers straight line speed should go to the place they made just for that. It's called a "drag strip". I agree, the straights are the most boring (non-fun) part of a road course.
