I think the idea is that it's better than nothing.

I have done lead/follow as a student a couple of times and found it a very positive experience. There comes a point in time where I just wasn't getting as much out of the in car instruction as I thought I should be getting, so we tried the lead/follow. Big possitive difference, I got way more out of following as far as line and braking points. Then when I was leading a lot more feedback on the good stuff I was doing as well as the not so good.

Overall, I found the lead/follow a very positive experience and would highly recommed everyone give it a try. Of course, the instructor has the final say and there must be a certain comfort level between instructor and student. I found the lead/follow a great experience!

I can clearify the Track Program can and has done lead follow but
this typically an exception case with a more experienced driver.

The foundation of our track program is the in-car instructor. L-F is anything but consistant with that goal. Thus, you probably won't see published guidelines or encouragement to use that format for the reasons Richard Anderson accuratly described. I'll cover it in the instructors drivers
meeting on the rare occation the situation comes up. We should be
consistant with CarGuys when this is done.

I look at L-F as an option we can resort to, for example, to address an
issue with equal protection or give an advanced driver a check out. Our program is flexable enough to be novice friendly but still allow an experianced racer to use program to lean a new track or test in a non- pressure environment.

I'm happy to see the judement and decision made to simply convert
the race car to be suitable for HPDE . That is clearly the best solution
for all concerned, espically the student.

Typically we don't recomend full blown race cars for initially learing to drive on track but thats not to say all race cars are unsuitable. There are some bargins and sensible examples such as an Showroom Stock Miata or Neon.We have conflict with T1 cars because the SCCA Club Racing rules allow the drivers seat to be changed but not the passanger seat.
To convert one for HPDE typicially you need to add a race type
passanger seat to get the harnesses to work and provide equal
protection. You would have to put the stock seat back in when
you club race-not a big deal.

I hope that answers your question and concerns about L-F
