What are some ways to get discounted HPDE entry fees? Is working for/on anything during the event an option? Anyone try working for SCCA races for discounts? how does that work?

Here are my tips:
Cheap car - neither an R32 (which btw PJ, nice car) nor an M3 qualify, sorry. Spend money on yourself before a fancy hunk of metal.
Camp whenever possible - one time purchase of camping stuff is often ≤ one weekend at a hotel.
Shop around - rates for events vary. Clubs and tracks charge different amounts so shopping carefully helps.
Second mortgage - so you can get 30 events under your belt and maybe become an instructor.

There is a reason you see sooooo many Miata's and Honda's at HDPE's.

Well, it isn't always the best idea. I have camped at VIR in sub-freezing temps. Having a pair of Labs with me made it toasty warm!

You can go cheaper than that! And you can drive almost anything daily. Toughen up!

They get paid. I think that VIR was advertising needing help in that area. It is like ≈$9/hr and 9-10 hour days, so perhaps that is a way. I guarantee you will learn a bunch too just observing what is done right and what is done wrong.

Here is real budget. If I were smart enough to take my own advice I would buy it instead of having one foot off the cliff with my next stupid idea.

OK, so how about
Quote:
1982 chassis, built by Datsun Dynamics. Solid roof, crank windows, early style oil cooler, ACT clutch and pressure plate, rear sway bar w/ poly bushings, new transmission shift bushings, removable steering wheel, Sparco racing seat, G-force 5 point camlock harness, Redline diff and trans fluid, halon fire system, brand new Brembo front brake rotors, brand new wheel bearings, new radiator (one season old), Mazda Comp strut tower brace (new in April), aftermarket pedal covers (for heel/toe). SPARES: engine that last ran when removed from a prior SRX7, pass side door, brand new front Hawk blues + a near new set on the car, brand new rear Hawk blacks, four sets of rims and tires: One set of almost new rains (probably have 2 sessions on them) on American Racing rims+one unmounted rain tire, one set of slicks on AR rims (tires have good tread, but are 2 years old), one set of slicks on diamonds (tires are good and have good tread, around a year old), a spare AR rim with no tire (but I think that rim might be tweaked, not sure), OEM rims with junk tires for use in the garage. Also, more spares: dash, trans (needs rebuild), limited slip and axle housing, spindles, rear bumper; tons of parts, many brand new including a master cylinder and a rear brake caliper. I've got crap in boxes that I've never opened. I remember even seeing the original stereo that came with the car and a gauge cluster. Mechanically, the car is absolutely trouble free. Cosmetically, it is one of the best in the paddock. $4500 takes everything. Or the car only, without spares, on stock rims(not shown) for $3500. Price for spares will be posted after car is sold. mymmohamed@yahoo.com

HUGE Picture of car.
Some negotiating and you have a really low budget car with lots of spares and ready for whatever steps you might want to take. Best of all, there is MazdaSpeedComp to help with prices.

The 2.5RS is pretty cheap to track - it's slow as Hell, so you don't use very much brake, and it's relatively lightweight, so tires last a while. And a great suspension setup can be had for ~ $1k. Plus, you have to do something really stupid to get in trouble (I've done only mildly stupid stuff so far with no consequences  ).

An STi on the other hand...

2X the gas
2X the tire wear
2X the brake pad
5X the rotor

hopefully 10X the fun! :D

My advice:

Do a school or two more in the R32. See if you TRULY like it and want to delve deeper down the rabbit hole. At that point, I know from Dan's experience selling a R32 is not too hard, start shopping for mildly built cars that are reliable for what you wanna do. If HPDE's and TT's are your only goal then a fully caged car isnt what you are looking for. There are TONS of used, well sorted and reasonbly priced track cars for sale every day but you need to have your goals for said car clear before taking the
plunge.

Off season is the BEST time to find deals on used "race" cars.

NASA gives you worker credits that you can use to get free HPDE's, it used to be work 2 weekends get 1 weekend free, but I am not sure of the current setup. Since I actually "work" for NASA I made a little arrangement with the NASA-MA director, where I don't get paid... I just get to drive on track free :)

As far as cars, there are several well sorted relatively cheap Honda race cars for sale, of course these would be non street legal and need to be towed to events however but some of them can be had for as low as 2000.

Car Guys will give you worker credits also. I'm not sure what the payoff rate is.
