during the course of registering for HPDE's with other clubs i have been asked to provide auto insurance info. i am thinking about turning in my tag and dropping the insurance on the bmw. i am guessing i would still be covered, but not the car. what does everyone else do when a car is no longer street legal? thanks, steve

What is the reason the club/organization gives for asking you to provide your auto insurance info?

Most auto insurance companies won't cover HPDE stuff, unless you have a very friendly agent, or you get lucky and they don't ask where the wreck happened, and/or ask if you have a police report on it.

Steve...

If they are asking specifically asking for auto insurance coverage, then yeah, really none of their business. However, you'd be better off keeping some coverage in case the unthinkable happens. There are a few insurance companies that cater to the HPDE/show/collector crowd specifically for non-street legal vehicles. Off the top of my head, I can't think of one... but maybe someone will remind us.

State Farm has paid off on HPDE claims in the past. I'm not sure what their current policy is.

We have an independant insurance salesman that is a Tarheel member. He has autox'd and HPDE'd with us. I would be curious to see what insight he may be able to provide.

One of the companies that Stacy might be thinking of is American Collectors Insurance. You negotiate an agreed upon value. They write a quote based on that value. Just keep in mind that there is a 20% deductable. I'm not sure if their policy covers medical or just the car.

If you completely drop a car off your policy and then have an accident in it Steve why would you think that they would cover you (medical and/or liability). You have no coverage on the vehicle. It doesn't exist to them.

A few folks that have read their recent policy updates are finding that not only is the insurance company stating "timed" events aren't covered. Now they're adding wording that pretty much says if it happens on track it's not covered. So apparently they are wising up to "driver's education" still being on track, timed or not. Many of the major carriers have it documented, and one, that happens to be my carrier has it in their new policy.

This is somewhat popular in the 914 crowd. While 914 prices are going up, up, up. There are a number of people who have spent much more on the car than what your regular adjuster is going to give you (regardless of what receipts, etc. you may have). So policies wtih agreed upon value is what they do.

i have the car on my commercial policy. i have a rider for vehicles not on the policy (ie. rented trucks etc.)

the problem is i don't want to discus this with my agent as it might screw the pooch. i may just keep the car on the policy.

Well I'm not sure how the rider thing works. But I don't blame you for not wanting to talk to the insurance agent. Even if your local agent is sympathetic to you that doesn't mean the underwriter at corporate is...

I think we've had a rather lengthly thread on this in the past, and the concensus was that your insurance company might pay off... once. Then one of two things will happen: If you've told the truth and they actually pay off, your rates go through the ceiling, or they summarily drop you and put you on the dreaded BLACK LIST !!!

On the track, I say ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances. If you screw up the car, you cough up the jack to fix it and go on... :?

i agree Brad, i was more concerned with the ability to sign up for events without insurance on the vehicle. First Coast Chapter BMW CCA requests my carrier & policy number on their medical form. and i can't swear to it but i think Chin also asked if my vehicle was insured and by whom.

i wonder if it doesn't have something to do with liability on my part were i to cause another participant to crash etc. with most states requirng no fault type insurance anymore. i don't have a clue honestly. one more cost to justify to the wife i guess.

I think its well withing your right to ask why they are asking for that info. Maybe they don't necessarily require it... I don't know. I for one and very interested to know the reasons behind it. I can see a group asking for health insurance carrier on a med form, but not auto insurance.

Steve,
If you have an accident or casualty with you car, I believe the less people who know who your carrier is the better. Also the less chatter about it on the internet the better. If you have an off and hit something then what ever transpires between you and the insurance co. is between two parties. If the club and or the business that is sponsoring the event has your info then there's no telling how many people are available to refute you statement. That way if you hit a tree you hit a tree, or a wall, etc, etc. Thats my story and I'm sticken' to it.

It may be that these other driving organizations want to verify you have a way for covering any damages you may incur to another vehicle.

Personally, if you can't afford to walk away from it, don't bring it to the track. Any damages on track, pay for them out of your own pocket. Talk to the insurance company as little as possible.
