Howdy,

for an HPDE, can the driver have an aftermarket reclinable seat and the passenger/instructor have a stock seat if both are using factory 3point seatbelts?

thanks

Yes, you can, although it is not well received. Generally speaking, most instructors want the same gear as the student, primarily for safety, but in this case, it will keep them 'in the seat' in a much more friendly manner. - AB

The bottom line is that you should contact a THSCC HPDE/TT staff member INDIVIDUALLY to discuss your concerns, whether by phone or e-mail, or in person, as a staff member is the one that will make the final call based on the written rules or at the Tech Director or their deisgnee's discretion where applicable.

Thanks,

Personally, as an instructor, I wouldn't have a problem with it as long as you are using the three points.

Dan... as far as getting the car teched... since it sounds like the seat isn't necessaritly a 'race' seat (fixed position, heavy lateral supports), and you're using stock belts on both, it shouldn't be a problem. If the stock seat is leather, I'd recommend getting a decent cloth seat cover for it... that will actually go a long way in helping your instructor 'stay put'

OR...Get some of the spongy rubber shelf liner material from K-Mart/WalMart/Lowes/Home Depot and cut pieces big enough for the seatback and the seat bottom. I've seen numerous people use that on leather seats to keep them planted. The material really is grippy, and doesn't slide around on the leather. I'd dare say it's grippier than a cloth seat cover.

Why not consult the club's track Tech Guide and see what it says
about EQUAL protection for BOTH driver and Passanger?

Some of our instructors have complained about having to ride in
vehicles where the driver has a racing seat and the passanger does
not. Things like harnesses do not always fit properly with a stock
seat and there is less protection for the upper body and head in
rear impacts. Your nice and snug and your instructors is hanging on
for life. Effective 2006 competitoin seats are specifically mentioned
as part of "equal protection". Your instrutor may require you do
lead follow if they don't feel they have equal protection.
