whats the rule or rule of thumb as far as tread depth for an HPDE? my yoko ES100s are on their last leg and i need for them to last through a 2 day HPDE w/ audi club in November at VIR full. I can't find Audi Club's tech inspection form and the THSCC forum doesn specifiy a minimum.. is there a rule for this? Will anyone care as long as theyre not completely bald, etc?

if they dont make it i guess i'l be on all seasons for the event.. :?

Completely bald = broken in (unless it rains).

Corded = unacceptable.

I just went through the NASA tech rules and inspection process for my trip to Roebling. Their rules say at or above the wear bars, or roughly 2/32nd at inspection. Different clubs seems to range from "no corded tires" to the "not below the wear bars".

Dan,

Let us know what your impressions are on those tires for track duty. I have a strong feeling that I'll be putting a set through the paces next season if I try an HPDE.

thx,
Matt

Code:
2.5 Tires
It is not required to present track tires at the Annual Tech Inspection.
Tires used on track must meet or exceed the speed rating specified by the
vehicle’s manufacturer. H speed rating is the required minimum, unless the
OEM specifications are greater. Tires must be in good condition. Tires can
not show cords at any time during the event. In order to facilitate wet
weather use, the minimum tread depth should be 3/32” or .0937”. Drivers
using slick tires will not be permitted to run during wet conditions. We do
not recommend the use of a repaired, plugged, or patched tire for high
speed operation. Verify driver/owner is aware of the tire manufacturer’s
minimum and maximum recommended values of inflation pressure.
Drivers are reminded that tires should be constantly monitored during the
event for wear and inflation pressures.

Regards,
--Ashraf

The event you referenced is sponsored by the Potomac-Chesapeake Chapter of the Audi Club of North America. The Registration Packet link is: http://www.audiclubna.org/chapters/poto ... Packet.pdf
It looks like they have not yet posted their tech requirements, but you could email Coy Gillenwater or Mark Nguyen for info in the meantime (emails and phone #s at bottom of first page of registration).

I've done a couple of events with them, and there are frequently cars running race rubber without tread, so they may not have an official tread depth requirement.

Mark or Coy can give you the straight poop.

Marvin is correct, I've done five events with the Audi club. IIRC they have exactly the same tech form as THSCC. They do require a tech inspection done by a certified mechanic before the event.

bump for a new situation with new bald tires!

i have four street tires now (sumi HRTZIIs). two are totally fine. two are not so fine. one has a couple 32nds id guess, and the other actually has about a 2" wide strip of baldness. like you can still see the tread, but its basically band. the tread is up to 3 32nds id guess elsewhere on the tire..

any chance this would get me by VIR in feb? If not its ok, i can run the new Azenis, but id really like to give this a propery death/burial and be done w/ them. or at least two of them. i also want to avoid the azenis cuz theyre brand new and i dont want to chunk them up...

assuming good weather of course and id bring the azenis as backup if needed. i guess i'm more concerned about tech inspection, etc
