Ok so this is just my personal pet peeve, but I hate having to install and remove the instructor's intercom headset each run session. I never seem to get it situated exactly right. I'd rather have the ear pieces and mic already in my helmet and be able to just plug-in to the instructor's jack.

Is there a problem with this? I would keep various adapters on hand if need be to make sure I can connect to whatever jack the instructor's system has.

Maybe something like this Stable Energies Setup

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Sounds like a great idea if you're willing to fork out the $$$ for the hardware.

The only problem I see is that it might be impossible to have adapters that will work with all instructors communicators. I've seen instructors using sets by Nady (the crappy blue ones- I have 2 of those), HJC (I have those too), as well as Chatterbox and others. Some of those have unusual connectors and I don't know if a generic headset will be compatible with all of them.

I guess worst-case scenario is that you mount your headset in your helmet, and you could still use the instructors "student" headset if yours is not compatible with their set..........

Bret.

I figured that 99% used the 1/8" phono-type plug jacks with the 1/4" being the other option. Adapters for those are common.

Are there others that I need to know about?

I've noticed that I can hear my instructor better without the high-tech crap in my ear. And it's a lot less distracting.

The HJC Chatterbox has a "pin" plug like for S-Video or a PS/2 keyboard / mouse and from what I can tell, is becoming the new standard for communicators based on recommendations I hear for new instructors purchasing equipment since they don't break as much as the NADY...

Thanks for the info. Looking at this pageis does look like a PS/2 connection. However I'm sure an adapter can be fabricated to mate the PS/2 connection with a 1/8" phono-type plug. All I need is one to play with to make it work. Rob, do you agree? Anyone got one I can borrow? If so can you bring it to the meeting tonight?

Here is what should be the pinout for a Chatterbox Mono. Google and Russian hackers are your friend:

Exactly what I needed! Thanks very much!

Edit: I have access to a Chatterbox setup. I also need one of the other designs to make sure it all works when I'm done. Doe anyone have one of these I can borrow for a few days please? if so maybe you could bring it to the meeting tonight?

When I was doing in car I had great sucess with using the small speaker and microphone from an old speaker phone. Bury the speaker behind the helmet foam by your ear and do the same with the mike but of course inside the front of the helmet. I brought it all out to a jack I glued to the side of the helmet (could also jsut have a pig tail dangling free). The speaker made a HUGE difference in being able to hear and understand the student, in this case, the instructor.

Cost: my favorite: Zero!!

I'm dragging up an old thread here with some possible good news.

I have a friend in Texas who's been building affordable headset kits for us Lemons/Chump guys. His stuff is what our team uses and it works great.

He has been asked by several racers who are also HPDE instructors about building an interface between their in-helmet radio stuff and the popular HPDE in-car intercom systems. I received and e-mail from him today saying he now has interfaces for both the Chatterbox and Nady systems.

He is sending me a Chatterbox one to try today. I will try it and if it works I'll pass along his info so anyone else who might like to go this route can do so.

The cost is $30, which includes shipping.

I don't recall a build thread or any pics. Is it top secret or something?

BTW, here's the web link:

The guy's name is Troy Hogan. Tell him I sent you.
