It's hard to I will admit, but knowledge is power (via a radio) sometimes too.
For instance, I was in the lead on Saturday and was driving the wheels off the Golf (literally as it turned out) trying pass the Caprice. That driver was excellent at handling that beast of a heavy car and he made few mistakes. I ran nose to tail with him for 5-6 laps and finally used traffic to box him in so I could get passed him. Mind you he was fast enough to not 'hold me up', but I still wanted to be ahead of him. I mean it's a race right?
Finally they radioed me from the pits letting me know I was several laps ahead of that car, so why did I need to pass him? I moved over, pointed him by, and proceeded to follow him like a running back follows his blocker in football. Until the tire problem forced me in, he and I ran nose to tail for many more laps, and I didn't have to use up the car doing so. No need to 'race' a car you are that far ahead of.
BTW, my driving didn't kill the tire. 5 hours with 3/4" toe-IN did that!
