On the flip side of that, I have done a couple of arrive and drives and will never do it again unless there is a Penske, Rahall, or Andretti involved. YOu can end up with 1) A$$hats 2) NIce guys with totally unpreppared, unsafe cars or 3) a combination of the above.

So what is the general price range someone might expect to pay for an "arrive and drive" arrangement?

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I tend to forget details of bad things. I think I paid $300 plus my share of gas, in both cases that was none due to no track time. I have had somebody drop in my office and say they heard I was a good driver and they would like me on their team for $800! I did not take them up on that. Steve has found some folks that were really good deals, of course one of those good deals ended with him at a chiropractors office because the seat wasn't put in right or something. I wouln't do it one unless I has some hand in the prep of the car, then again had I not been around the proper prepping of the car I don't know if I would know what proper is.

For example, On one the belts were attached totally wrong, perhaps they would be caught in tech but in any case the person hadn't done it right. On one the fuel cell was the biggest fluster cluck you have ever seen. After seeing a car burn up at Daytona that is kind of hot button issue for me.

The range varies from team to team and can also depend if you are driving a "contender" or not. Our team charges a "rental fee" plus 1/4 of all costs associated with that event including, but not limited to, entry fees, licenses, tires, brakes, race fuel, towing fuel, etc. Obviously 24 hour events cost more.

For a competitive car with a proven history, that would be cheap.

In fact, Simon Says' ACTUAL expenses for the 24 were more than $800 per head. This is all inclusive from the moment we left home until returning home, and includes a lot of pits, spares, planning essentials, camping fees, tow gas, etc.

But if *I* were renting a seat, you better believe it would be for more than my actual expenses.

Can it be done for $500? Sure, if you don't want a chance of doing well or driving the whole time.

That sounds about right from our experience.

Racing is expensive...even in a "$500" car series. If you want to actually win, it's even moreso.

Part of crewing this past weekend was to help me figure out what is next for me personally. I currently don't have all of the required accoutrements (my helmet is out of date, I don't have a suit, etc.) I will likely acquire those in 2014 and consider an arrive and drive in 2014. I will likely also try to do some more crew work in 2014. I think I am also going to focus on getting my personal track car done in the remainder of this year and next. Eventually (2015 or beyond?) I would like to find a team to join.

I can say that my expenses for the 24 were close to that when you factor in my food and gas getting there. And I only made 5 practice laps :)

Like anything in racing, you just don't want to do the math as it can be overwhelming. Even still, it's much cheaper than my ProSolo/National Tour/Nationals costs from the last 10 years. I would spend easily $2k for Nationals/ProFinale alone (with all costs factored in) and I would get about 12-15 minutes of total seat time  - AB

Fyi, we were not using VIR gas. Brought our own.

Randy had the ability to bring two 50 gallon drums that he could pump from to fill our gas cans, but didn't because there was a rumor floating around that there would be just a mild uplift for the gas prices at the VIR pumps. When I can buy gas in Danville (93 octane) For $3.39 a gallon, I don't see $4.85 a gallon at VIR as a "mild" uplift. That's a 46% uplift. Regardless, we only ended up using about 10 gallons of their fuel during the practice and very little during the race

How much fuel are you allowed to bring there? I know that a couple of years ago they put a limitation on it. - AB

http://virnow.com/about-vir/fuel/

They specifically prohibit bringing in outside fuel in 55g drums. They specifically state that you can bring "up to 20 gallons of fuel in acceptable containers to the track without penalty."

Fuel at VIR has ALWAYS been a good bit more expensive than the local gas stations.

I guess you could bring in a 55g drum of fuel and claim it was 93 octane ethanol-free fuel to take advantage of the "VIR will not enforce any restrictions against fuel grades we do not carry" clause......

"VIR will not enforce any restrictions against fuel grades we do not carry."

just say your car runs best on 87 octane so that's what you brought in the drums
