Doing Lemons/Chump is another good way to dip your foot into the W2W pool. The best part is you get more seat time and can share the (considerable) expenses with your 3 teammates.

I am so useless with a wrench that I doubt I would be much use to a Lemons team, alas! I used to entertain ideas of devoting more time to that part of the sport, but then I opened a new retail store. So there goes that. ;)

Have you ever met Remchak?

Also, it's never too late to learn. Before I started autcrossing back in 1999, all I could do was change the oil. Fast forward to today and I'm helping my team do engine and transmission swaps. Most of it has been "learn as you go".

Yeah, don't worry about not knowing how to turn a wrench- one of the most valuable members of a Chump/Lemons team is the one who brings the sammiches.

LOL I am a PRO at picking up takeout and taking tires to get mounted. If that's a qualification for Lemons, I'm back on board. ;) I also come with my own tow vehicle and trailer!

I can change brakes ... sorta.

My duties include social interaction and forum presence. I shake a lot of hands and kiss a few babies..............

I might piss a few folks off in the process...............

I think your problem Steve is that once in action you get things backwards. I think you have been kissing hands and shaking babies. ;) That does tend to piss people off.

Hmm, $10k, you say? :) http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/4016458520.html

SE30 is soooo 1999 (seriously, I knew Carter when he was kicking off the series!). I hear SE46 is the new hotness. Honestly, if it takes off that could be a great "work up to it" track car/toy.

Yeah, it sucks for me. I started building my car 2 years ago and nearly everyone I knew at the time in SE30 who were encouraging me to build a car has sold or is selling their car right before I start racing.

And I can't speak for anyone else, but an E30 is a "work-up-to-it" kind of thing for me. A $10k SE30 car plus racing expenses (which is not cheap by any means) is only just barely within my means (way beyond my means in some people's opinion). Jennifer was asking for a track car for around $10k and that's why I suggested an E30, and I still think it'd be great for her and her dad, Van. A $30k Spec E46 is absolutely out of the question for me at this time, but to those that can afford it, go for it. Hopefully there will be someone left to race in SE30 by the time I get my comp license.

spec e30 is still absolutely the go-to class for entry level w2w racing, and a terrific car to use for hpde. i'm hoping se46 will be where spec e30 is now in five years. i also wanted a track car with a better power/weight ratio than se30 and more sophisticated/adjustable suspension for when i'm NOT racing it.

chumpcar is also great for getting started in w2w, with the main difference being that it's more of a team effort than a solo endeavor.

Jason,

I know it's in the planning stages, but why limit it to 330i's only? There are a lot more 323i/325i/328i cars out there, especially in the "race car quality" price range. I know SpecE30 started out allowing e's and i's, but eventually went to all 325i's, but I'd be curious to see how available the 330's are for something like this.

You bring plenty to the ChumpLemons table...$, food, and a tow setup. Go for it.

power, pure and simple. otherwise it's just not fast enough to differentiate itself from se30/spec3 and be truly fun and exciting to drive. it limits the availability but not so much that it's a deal breaker, and if necessary a manual swap is done easily enough (takes the standard zf trans). besides, you gotta have *one* motor and one motor only, otherwise it's nothing but ballast and bitching (see: spec miata).
