It was really awkward to word but they originally said that they took the tree out to help with spectator's ability to see the start/finish. Except there isn't any spectator areas that could see that part of the track due to the north timing tower/classroom/barn building being in the way. It's a tree that only racers likely knew about. The next reason they gave is that they needed to 'widen pit lane.'

Damn, it's becoming a sanatized version of what it used to be. I'm starting to feel like those old guys that talk about the golden age of sports car racing.

Speaking of insane uses of money... did anyone else notice the tirewalls are brand new truck tires? I was riding shotgun around patriot with Roger and noticed they all had perfect tread, looked closer and saw they still had the inventory paint. I wouldn't put it past them to have custom hubs made so they can fill them with nitrogen.

And yes, from our breif trip to the pumps, they look to be paving ALL of north paddock. So, no more sand! But it'll be worse that CMS in the rain if they don't add some serious drainage. (power didn't look like it was being touched.)

they're almost certainly defective tires, qa rejects or something to that effect.

They don't stamp them until they've passed QA. (what little "QA" they get.) Those that fail are "marked" (sliced, punctured, shredded) so they cannot be sold; and then sent for recycling. While it's plausible, it's much more likely VIR just bought several thousand new tires. (in bulk, direct from the manufacturer)

VIR wouldn't buy defective tires for their walls; those things are dangerous! (*grin*)

(That's a LOT of defectives if that's the case. I'd like to know who made those them, so I can be sure to never buy their tires. I'd believe "old inventory" before defective.)

They might be all the tires that got remove of the market following the rollover saga of the Ford Explorer some years ago.

I ran full course and grand course last week and was surprised the first time I came down the front straight and didn't have the tree as a reference point.

Guess this shot is a bit more sentimental now.

For anyone who is still a bit sentimental, incredibly Google Maps lets you literally take a drive down memory lane @VIR. Apparently they sent the Google car camera around the track on an Atom, and the Oak Tree lives again!
