Awesome write up Mike. So SRI is a 2.8? What is their AIV? It has to be $900 at least.

Definitely a 2.8. It was fast ... they put probably 1/4 mile on us on the oval despite me having better exit speed entering the banking. I always caught back up in the infield though :)

No idea on AIV. How the heck am I supposed to know? Last I had heard on the forums, Condren did say that AIV was required for a 328i, but the car was stockish so it looked like it was presented as a "stock E36".

"stock E36" only applies to OBDI 2.5s. So unless SRI swapped in a 2.5l they shouldn't be under the stock rules. Seems to me they might be stretching the limits of the rules a bit too much.

Mike is a good guy, some of this is out of his hands. But I am curious what he has to say.

Agreed about Chisek. Everytime I hear the name Condren I want to stab him with a fork. I think I have more dislike for him than my MIL, and that's saying something.

Got Mike's response, but waiting to hear whether it's OK for me to leak it in public.

Figured I'd add Book Smart's race weekend highlights here as well.

First off, congrats to Simon Say's for another podium finish! There were some fast cars there and they set the pace for the race!

Saturday was a light day for us. We opted out of the sprints as we were not sure what to expect in terms of car carnage but we were all very impressed with how well everyone raced during the series of events. It was very entertaining to watch and the small infield course looked like it would wear you out in a 40min session! Dustin's last to first run was epic!
Later in the afternoon we discovered Simon's note on the dash bar and started laughing. Well played! Something fun as begun and a response is in the works. Of course it will work, our technology is awesome! Who else has a DIY linux based gps telemetry and 8 channel data logger that sync's to the google cloud? :) Well, until the vibrations around CMS rattled the SD card loose and it stops working on lap 18. Perhaps your right! :)
As always, a great time hanging out with you guys.

The schedule shift really messed with our driver lineup since we brought 5 to race the event. After some discussion and planning, we decided that it was my turn to draw the short straw and sit this one out. No biggie, Patrick and I usually get most of the extra stints at the other races so it was only fair.

Dwayne took the green flag for the first stint and pushed through the first stint traffic. I was relieved that the car was running well since it was the first time it has been raced since the last round of repairs and changes. Near the end of his stint, he spun in turn 5 and radioed in that he thought something was broke in the suspension. We were prepared as it was close to the end of his stint so we brought the car in. Once back in the pits, we didn't find anything wrong with the car and came to the conclusion that it was gas/water on the track from the cars that just completed their first pit stop. That 7:30 pit stop really hurt us as we dropped from 8th to 20th place.

Pete was in the car for the second stint. Everything went smooth with his stint until the very end when he was lightly bumped and pushed off track. Very minimal impact to our position but he did manage to climb us from 20th back up to 14th. Everything on the car was working great! At this point we realized how much our changes were simplifying life.

Jamie jumped in and started putting down some good laps and we climbed from 14th to 12th. He had some really good battles going on for position. Near the end of his stint there were 4 cars all on the same lap within 30sec of each other.

Patrick jumped in at the end and ended up racing with Team Infinity for position all the way to the end. Constant changes in position and hard racing until the last lap where Team Infinity ran out of gas on the middle of the infield and we went around.

Overall we were happy with the top 10 finish and had a BLAST at the track! Everyone is ready to come back in November for the race! The 24hour will be our next event and really looking forward to it!

-Scott

2.8s are the best stock US market engine. With stock parts they'll do 220-230 at the wheels. The 3.0 and 3.2 cranks have a long throw that vibrates the engine to death. The 2.8 is a nice compromise. I knew it would not be long until people with real racing experience would show up with a 328 and smack every body.

So I got an email back.

Sri's 328 was deemed legal at tech under the stock E36 rule. It was a mistake because of an outdated rule book / lack of knowledge of tech inspectors. Sounds like it won't happen again. It was not AIV'ed from what I understand. I do not know if it had penalty laps.

I can tell you, from a direct examination of the car, that it looked like it was built to the stock E36 rule set. I did find (1) shock tower reinforcement plates (which could be legal, who knows), (2) an LSD, (3) solid poly-looking subframe bushings, and (4) reinforced subframe (who would protest for that !?!! Legal or not, do it!)

It also pulled away from me a *little* bit faster than it should have in stock form. Not accusing, just a subjective opinion.

Fyi, I'm not posting this on chumpcar forums, which tend to be a mess. But I have no control over leaks :)

As long as it's dealt with at VIR I'm fine with it. There are at least two teams on the Chump forum already talking about protesting the car. I'll keep stirring the pot. But I see no reason to quote Chisek. If anything that might deflect the discussion.

Thanks for the info Mike.

I'm shocked! He only posted 4,000 versions of the 2013 rules

Last year at the VIR 24, Bernie was getting his car checked over, and the tech wouldn't shut up about a dash bar that he's seen 4 guys die from. I was surprised that the eye roll was audible.

I thought I was about to go help break up a fight when the inspector decided to start being a dick to Bernie.

Chump is looking for volunteers (desperately, it seems) for the VIR 24. I know if I wasn't driving or crewing, it would be a great way to be involved in the weekend.

They are even offering free entry to a team who gets a cadre of volunteers together. Might be an opportunity for anyone out there who can "claim" to have a team of 4 who could all volunteer. (Heck if we could get 4 volunteers as part of Simon, we'd figure out how to make it worth your while)
