Steven, I couldn't agree more. I definitely would not sacrifice safety to save some money.

Most likely I will be having Chris install the cage soon. :-)

We initially installed an Autopower bolt-in that we later welded. The fitment was poor, probably because it was designed for a car with an interior and had huge gaps between the cage and the car. We ended up paying $3800 to have it removed, have the huge rusty areas in the floor (think Flintstones car) patched and reinforced with good metal, and have a custom cage built. The car is much easier to get in and out of, nobody looks twice at it at tech, and I feel somewhat better about my chances of surviving a collision. It's also nice when I jack the car up and the jack doesn't go through the bottom of the car.

I have a Chris Schimmel custom made bolt-in bar in my E30 that I'm quite happy with. At the time it was built I was using the car as a daily driver (and all the fenders were straight), so the bar was built with just enough clearance to add the required foam padding. We decided at the time to make the diagonal and harness bar removable to provide access to the back seat during off-track use. While it seemed like a handy feature at the time, I seldom removed the bars and just threw stuff in the back through the opening behind the driver's seat.

This is a potential option as well; and if you do proceed on to wheel to wheel just unbolt and resell.

Hopefully you'll never see the cage used for its intended purpose. If you do, you need it to work REALLY well that one time.

Don't cut corners just to save some money. Saving a few hundred bucks isn't worth it.

I agree with Steven Carter.

I wished my work truck had a cage.

You can also buy the roller behind butler's house with a cage. Needs door bars to be complete.
