We were running well until about 2.5 hours from the end when the Duff car lost all of it's compression ...
2:15 from checker, coming around T6 the car suddenly sounded very wrong, but I was surrounded by other traffic and thought it might just be one of them. But then I noticed my smoke trail and said (yes, I talk to myself while driving) "I've seen this BBQ before"... I got over, let traffic clear -- who knows, I might be throwing various fluids everywhere -- and yep, that odd I'm-running-on-3-cyl sound was me. And I had absolutely
no power. At idle it wasn't shaking -- and would idle just fine -- so I puttered back to the paddock. No compression on cyl-2. Robert took it back out with #2 injector disconnected. It lasted 20-30 min before he barely got it back to the hot pit. A cart pushed it back to the paddock.
We were in a solid 6th place -- second in class -- at the time. :-(
[Note: It was burning oil "slowly" all day Saturday. It never came off track so we never had a chance to top it back off. I was in it up to the checker -- 45min or so. It would drop to zero oil pressure around every corner. That'll teach you to drive a momentum car! Completely unpowered cornering. In retrospect, we should've brought it off track and put oil in it. At the end of the day, it was 2q+ low, and it started ~1 high; it was just touching the dip stick.]
