last weekend at nasa mid Atlantic vir event they held a "hyperdrive" for people who have never been on track but are interested. for 50 bucks these people got a single classroom session followed by a single track session on Saturday afternoon. i know last year there was trouble generating enough participation at a couple of the thscc events. maybe a program like this would help get people in the door and addicted to the sport like the rest of us.

I think something like that is a good idea, I have people all the time say they are interested but I think the first step is too big for them to take.

IMO it's a waste of $50 since the track session ends up as a huge parade lap or people 'laying back' to see if they get a run and go fast for a few seconds.

VK hyperdrives run the same as a group 1 session with passing with a point by. They are an excellent way to introduce folks to track events. You are confusing them with parade laps. Ask NASA how well they're working.. :)

yeh, i think that was the point of the bimmerforums post Bernie. of course if i had to guess, i would think Jason was saying that NASA is doing a dis-service to racing by not smacking that student's hand away from the shifter. can't say that i don't agree to some extent.

Jason tends to believe that many organizations are doing a dis-service to racing. he once told me that i would regret my time in LeMons / Chump once i finally went racing for realz.

i've already got a solid $50 for every crushed fender delivered in CCA, i am willing to offer the same bounty for NASA.....................

This is very successful for MidAtlantic, but they are the only group I know that is doing it.

It might be easier to just bundle this idea with the VIR charity laps. I know they are just spirited parade laps, but it would allow 'students' to go out on the full course more than once ($25/20min). I'm planning on going to the March 30th VIR charity laps event. Granted it's very informal, but there would be little planning and no real direct cost to the club.

Charity laps buy you nothing as far as hpde, tt, or racing is concerned. Without an instructor in the car the laps are just killing time. If you haven't done an HPDE and think you'll get something out of it you're mistaken. HYPERDRIVE is classroom and a track session with and instructor. Granted all instructors are not equal as witnessed by the video. As a novice, charity laps will only teach you bad habits that won't work at high speeds
IMHO

I think offering a one-day or half-day option could be a very smart move. For folks with limited budgets (time or money, or both), this could sway them to go ahead and sign up vs waiting until later...a timeframe that may never materialize. I know for me I can't take an entire weekend away to go driving, so having other choices would be attractive.

We pretty much will always take one day only Saturday Students at our HPDE's. If anyone is interested, just let me know before you register and I'll adjust the cost before your card is charged.

March 30? in the North Paddock? how long does it last? we are trying to figure out what time they will allow us into the paddock for the March 31 race. VIR's calendar says it is some kind of an open house.

You can do a lap in a Atom that day as well, I would assume in the passenger seat.
