Have you ever seen The General Lei run? The compression levels are right in spec and it burns about 1 quart of oil in 40 runs!

and it gets dogged hard and put away wet only to sit for months on end. and typically it starts right up. of course it is a Nissan, not a Honduh.

Point being the General wasn't made/designed in Germany!

i'd be willing to bet there is some hijacked German technology and probably some German sourced parts on that fine piece of Japanese machinery.

It is technically possible since our CEL is in fact on, and has been for about 5 years. :P

No worries - I checked, and the engine is still there.

The way these things work, if someone were to spend a bunch of time and money on another car like the General to get it ready for Chump or Lemons, it would undoubtly self-destruct on the warm-up laps and then burn to the ground while being towed back into the paddock.

Update. This thing runs amazing. It is no longer burning oil and it pulls hard through the power band.

Thinking about getting a plate and drive it around for a month before going under the knife to get ready for next year!!

Man, this thing is fun to drive... Might need to find another just to use as a beater!!

Extremely good idea. Take it to a DE and run a couple of sessions as well. Having just wasted a Chump event as a result of a car that wasn't sorted...I wish this had been done to the car I had rented.

while definitely a good idea, not always a fool-proof plan. Cooper's car blew up 30 minutes into the race and it had several hours of testing at CMP.

moral being, when using "the knife", cut judiciously.

And if AT ALL POSSIBLE, run it in 2 back-to-back (zero-or-as-little-downtime as possible) sessions, try to get it driven hard for at least an hour straight no stops.

30 minutes seems to be the magic mark for head gasket, cooling, and motor issues to really start to develop.

Thanks for all the good advice!!

Looking into the motor a little more, it appears to be the original head gasket. I'm thinking that is one part we will go ahead and take a cost hit on. I remember reading the rules where is says some things like hoses and gaskets don't make since to get used and possibly not count against the vehicle cost?

Starting a spreadsheet of things to go over on the car when we get ready to dig into it.

Mike, how much did the oil cooler you add help the temps? Found a b18c oil to water heat exchanger at a local junk yard yesterday but didn't pick it up. Wonder if it would be enough.

Why? Do you consider a headgasket a wear item? Unless the car has been overheated why mess with the headgasket?

I'm still amazed that Mike's held and even ran well after they changed it. Generally speaking once the car has been overheated, simply changing the gasket hardy ever works.

we decided that using a gauge that didn't read 45 deg too high was a better solution than adding an oil cooler. naturally we decided this after installing the cooler.
