Why don't they last? My father has three of them. He is an ASE BMW, Porsche and Mercedes mechanic. As well as a diesel mechanic, he thinks making on last 24hrs is easily doable.

By the way, thanks for oh guys that have been there and done that let me think out loud. Thinking I need to find what teams on here are doing the VIR race and hang out/help in the pits to get a good feel and idea of what its all about.

I think we're still looking for crew, you and your brother are welcome to join us in July at VIR!

As a special bonus for anyone crewing with us I'll have the air conditioned 23' camper for getting out of the heat during the day, and for catnaps at night. It was really nice to have at Lemons.

i plan to build an e36 lemons/chump car, i expect to be heavenly penalized but i dont care about that. it will be a solid reliable car that will have no problem lasting the length of the race. for me finishing position does not matter driving time is what i'm concerned about. if the penalties become to severe and i want to win i can build another car if that time ever comes.

If your dad thinks so, then go for it- just make sure he understands he'll need to come along as crew chief for you.

924's are cool looking cars, but they don't have a stellar reputation when it comes to reliability.

For Lemons or Chump, you want something reliable. If you start out with a car with a reliable reputation, you're a few steps ahead of the masochists who start out with complete POS cars that could barely make it off the assembly line without parts falling off. Lemons seems to reward or at least appreciate those who bring POS oddball cars and manage to turn laps. If that's your thing, then I can see it being a bonding experience, but you need to make sure everyone on your team knows what the basic game plan is, or you risk mutiny.

Both series are still in the "budget" racing category compared to other series, but there is a large investment required to pull it off, and to try to make sure everyone gets seat time and you don't end up working on the car more time than it spends on track. Crew members will tend to get pissed/discouraged if they pay their money, then the car gets wrecked/blows up etc during the first hour of the race and they're SOL. Sure, it happens, but you need to try to do as much as you can to eliminate the likelihood.

I strongly suggest you go to a race as a spectator/crew member before you start building a car.

Most of the time (in my experience) most cars die due to overheating
Also see lots of cars die due to contaminated fuel tanks
and then some cars die because they are an utter piece of shit

Great advice, was just discussing this plan last night with my brother. I plan on helping Mike out @ the July VIR race to soak in as much as I can.

Remchak, Cline, and I will also be at VIR in a rented ride (blue/white Ford Contour). We plan to pit near the Magnum PU crowd if life goes well. Come by and say hello!

Having owned a 944 that tried to spend me out of house and home, I don't have the fondest feelings for that chassis. In theory, the 924 could be a good LeMons car on the shorter tracks, but not a lot of fun for some of the higher speed stuff that Chump runs. I've yet to personally see a "successful" LeMons car on that chassis yet. I've seen them finish races, but never particularly high. I've seen them blow head gaskets, eat fuel pumps, and my favorite - the random undiagnosable wiring issue. I'm assuming the 924 has the same issues with changing the clutch that the 944 has (drop transmission, slide torque tube out the back of the car, remove a bunch of other stuff, and THEN change the clutch.

The 924 has the 2.0 VW/Audi ABA motor right? It's a bit of a wheezer in stockish form, but I know there is plenty of knowledge about the motor that your Dad would be able to help with.

It's tough finding part store/junk yard parts for old BMWs when something breaks at the track. I'd imagine that it's d@mn near impossible to find stuff for a '77 924 on the fly. No matter how many spares you bring...you always need that part that is back at the shop.

The race is Saturday 7/30-7/31. My team is ABSOLUTELY looking for anyone who would be willing to crew / spotter so some of the driving crowd can get some rest. Bring a tent/sleeping bag, and we'll take care of the rest (food, gate passes, etc.)

Even if you just want to hang around for part of a day, we'd love to have some help.

Yes, I definately plan on being at the July VIR race. I would love to help out and do lots of soaking in of knowledge. I was reading the VIR schedule of the Chump race and it appears that you will be running the south course two time segments and the full course the third segment, interesting concept

Interesting in the fact the VIR changed yet another group's schedule because they can? They have done it to the Alfa guys more than once and their tradition continues.

FYI, the event was originally scheduled for a 24 hour event on the North Course. Apparently (after the fact) a big karting group wanted in on the same date and according to VIR, the South paddock wasn't big enough for the karting guys. Hence Chump Car got kicked to the South paddock where 80 teams will be packed in like sardines, which is actually an understatement.

I'm looking forward to running Full Course at night, but the whole business of switching back and forth just because it suits VIR better irks my ass.

I'm a little partial to these but if it's a manual, not a bad deal maybe.

I agree. Hell, we see 944s all the time in Lemons. They don't usually last thus they don't gather to much attention from the judges.
