My brother wants to do the CMP June HPDE event in the 318ti. Am I correct in that THSCC requires a HANS to do HPDE's starting this year? If so, is there a way he could rent or possibly buy used as he might only do a few (2) track events a year. He is looking at the CMP June event and the VIR N event (august if my mind doesn't suck)

TIA

Only if he wants to do time trials as well. DE rules are the same as last year except for the updating of the helmet certification requirements.

Gotcha, he might want to do a TT at the VIR-N date then. Thanks for the info James!

Perhaps a point of clarification. It does not need to be THE HANS device but rather a suitable head and neck restraint. There are many that qualify. A foam donut is NOT one of them.

I bought a Safety Solutions Hybrid R3 last week and wore it this past weekend at CMP. I like it so far, but I am probably going to have it modified from the tethers to a cable slide for more left-right movement.

I'm waiting for mine to come in this week. Do you mean you had the sliding tethers, and wanted even more movement?
Curious about the details - LeMons is all about situational awareness!

Yes, I have the sliding tethers and I want more movement.

HOWEVER, I must be moving my head more than most because EVERYONE said I would not move my head enough to have it bother me, but it did. I still like the device very much and highly recommend it. The cable option is an $80 upgrade and I think it will be money well spent.

And I don't think my experience would be limited to just the R3. I just think I move my head side to side more than most people and any device I wear is going to limit my movements more than most people.

i discussed this with kevin at cmp but i'll mention it here as well. a panoramic rearview mirror plus properly adjusted side mirrors work wonders when using a HNR device. if nothing else try the $13 clip-on one from advance auto.

I agree 1000% on the panoramic mirror. If you don't have one, get it. Money well spent. look at any of the video Jason posts and you will get a feeling for the extended field of view you get with one.

I went by Safety Solutions a couple of weeks ago and had them custom fit me for a cable slide. A cable slide is cut to length for you and replaces the adjustable tethers that ships with the R3 (and Hybrid, Rage, etc). Night and day difference!!!! Even though we shortened my forward movement by 3/4", I now have full left-right rotation. This upgrade is definitely money well spent.

Their office is in the Simpson World facility in Mooresville, NC. If you are not nearby, you can measure your adjustable tether and they can make and ship a cable slide to you.

I've got two HANS devices not being used. I didn't want to sell them in case I do more track in the future, but for now maybe I should rent them. Who's interested?

I just bought a Defender from Apex and Schroth Profi Hans 6-point. Had Apex drill and install the mounts on my helmet. Those folks are great to deal with. Good choice for a club sponsor. I've used them for years.

That said I was sitting in my race seat with this HANS device slipped on with my helmet. All I could think of is this thing is damned uncomfortable and it most certainly does limit left/right travel. So how long did it take you guys to get adjusted too and comfortable wearing these devices???

About 2 minutes. You will not even know it is there. The only issue is maneuvering around in the paddock. Now that I have a containment seat, it is worse.

That, and you'll never want to have to back out of a "parking" spot with it attached. Just leave the straps off til you are ready to go on track and you'll never notice them.

Thanks Jim. I got a new helmet. Last year I bought a Racetech and they sent me the containment version by mistake and told me to just keep it if I liked it. So I did. I also installed a roll bar. So I'm taking the safety much more serious but some parts just look and feel very cumbersome.

Thanks Brian, will do. I almost always back out of my space. Guess I'll start backing in at the end of a session.
