Anyone know anything about transferring a Transponder from one person to another? Recently picked up a new car that came with a transponder and I need to get it registered in my name. The mylaps.com website was all but useless as far as telling me what I need to do.

useless doesn't even come close to describing it. last time i checked there's very little you can do except pay them $50 or something to switch names on a transponder. fortunately it doesn't really matter, it's merely a convenience. the transponder i use isn't registered in my name but my race results show up properly which is all that matters.

What Jason says is correct AFAIK.

Just make sure you ask the PO for his login and password for the transponder to use on Mylaps.com and you'll be fine.

I can't believe no one has hacked those things by now. AMB has a pure-T monopoly on the transponder market.

Stephen- did you ever find out any details about the transfer process?

I've got a line on a used transponder, but need to find out how much of a PITA it is before I buy it.

Thx.

EDIT: found this which actually looks helpful-
http://www.mylaps.com/index.php/us_eng/ ... ansponders

$40 "admin fee" to re-register a used transponder on mylaps.com. Not too bad IMHO.

Steven,

I think he is right. I looked on the admin site and there isn't anything I can do from there.

They're $400 new and what, $250 used? I dunno, $40 seems annoyingly high to do something that one *should* be able to do online easily for free, IMHO.

I assume you get one free registration per device, right? As in if you buy one and never actually register it on mylaps.com and THEN sell it, the next buyer can then register it without the fee? If so, unregistered devices are worth nearly $40 more than registered ones, IMHO.

AMB is really being dumb here.

Agreed, they are being dumb.

But, they have a complete and total monopoly on the transponder market, not just race cars + bikes, but RC cars and apparently things like marathon races, triathalons, etc.

If you can get the original login/password from the previous owner, then I don't see any need to "transfer" the registration on mylaps, unless you're just really anal about that sort of thing. But, if they don't/can't give that info to you then you really have no choice but to pony up the transfer fee or live without mylaps.com access. The transponder will still work, and the data will be recorded at each event, it just won't be accessible via mylaps.

Thanks for the link Bret. I'm going to try and get the current login/password from the previous owner, but if not.....reluctantly, I can pay the 440.

$40, not $440
