Comments and opinions please:

G-Force: GF Pro Phenom - SA2005 -- $150

vs...

ZAMP: JA-2 - SA2005 -- $140

Only looked on Apex Performance for info so far. G-Force has more info and appears to top the ZAMP.

Looks like the G-Force is made with more advanced materials.

In any case, I'm open to suggestions.

TIA,

Steve

Open face helmets?? Seriously??

My suggestion would be anything except an open face.

I appreciate your concern and not withstanding the following I really do appreciate advice like yours... don't always follow it, but do give it consideration if it deserves it.

I'm well aware full face became the norm quite some time ago. And why. I still use open face for my own reasons. I'm well aware of the risks as my face has meet several steering wheels up close and personal.

Anyone is free to use any safety device that is developed even though not required... but have you noticed that most of the vociferous proponents only start to use them and support them being required after they already are, or are fixing to be...

Got a question for ya'll. When on the street... how many of you wear a H&N... Nomex... roll over protection WITH of course full restraints... fuel cells....... thought so. Given the mindset as noted above, one would think common sense dictates that you'd at least use some of these safety devices.... especially say like on 540 Friday afternoon with the slowest car doing 80 driven by folks who think they know how to drive, but couldn't make it in a forty acre field with a road map... Now before you go off all half cocked, I have no problem with all of the above being required with the exception of the H&N devices and other recent 'pile on' stuff being steadily introduced, and then required... [ see below ] I don't have a death wish nor oppose reasonable requirements... Ever head of 'diminishing returns'?

Don't take safety lightly either, however I've yet to see where it stops... being that fire retardant soaked cotton overhauls were still allowed when I joined the racing culture, I got a pretty good feel for how, when and why safety advances developed... fabricated many of them that were part of a race car... and tested many of them... ';)

If SFI [ Sure Fire Income ] had their way we'd be using aircraft type 'cocoons' like the Drag Boat folks. And you can bet the only approved source for such would be on the SFI board.

Seat belts only good for TWO years... give me a break folks... it would be laughable if not true and so draconian... and we use OEM belts of vintage origin for HPDEs... remarkable.

I'd bet a dollar to a donut most of you are big fans of 'personal responsibility'... join the Greek Chorus whenever the gumint tries to take your choices away... hate the 'do gooders' who try to protect you from yourself... right? What's the difference? I'll tell you what the difference is... nothing... and it ain't gonna get any better so long as PI lawyers and greedy insurance companies get their way for starters.

Let's see... just where do we eventually end up... perhaps RC from the High Roller Suites wearing our prescribed SFI approved padded gloves to prevent blisters... ';)

I was leaning that way but saw a few refs to using the ZAMP. Things aren't always as they seem on the surface so folks who've got real experience with something are a valuable resource... especially if they've used all of the candidates being considered.

Thanks,

Steve

Same here......except for the G-Force SA2000 helmet I used to have. Thing must have weighed a TON. Fiberglass gel coat isn't that strong either.

My Bell is 10x better.

My G-force skid lid is very heavy... I saw in Grassroots that they are now offering carbon fiber construction for around 400 bucks... seems like a good deal

To me, the decision between Zamp (FSA-1) and the Gforce was one of fitment - the Gforce had some pretty severe forehead pressure points for me, and the Zamp was significantly more comfortable. All other arguments went out the window after a test fit.

I agree about the fitment being the most important factor. I ordered a HJC AR-10 on-line and just got lucky because the fit was perfect.

Also mine has a completely removable and machine washable liner to keep the funk out. 8)

yes, since everyone's head is different I always recomend that people try each brand on and see what fit's best for them.

I am lucky that the g-forces tend to fit me well and I like the Air-Pro overall.

And my experience was exactly the opposite. Both the G-Force and the Bell were way more comfortable than the Zamp. (I bought the Bell) It was more expensive, but lighter and fit right

If there is anything I know about Vincent Keene...it's that he is exceedingly funky.

:runs away:

The removable/washable liner will be a selling point on my next helmet. I bought a G-Force SA2000 in 2000, and it's held up well, but the liner smells none too fresh.

Since I'll be buying an SA2010 helmet with Christmas money in early '11, I'm watching this thread with interest.

I've been very, very happy with my Impact Racing helmet. It has held up very nicely, especially the liner, over the course of six years or so. It was easily the most comfortable helmet of the dozen or more I tried on.

Fabreeze does wonders, I have a removable liner on my motorcycle helmet but I keep a bottle of fabreeze on the shelf next to it and spray it every time I come in. May not really be clean but smells fine.

I liked my G-Force but it never fit quite right. It was also heavy. I went to a SA2005 Bell Vortex. Since the threat of SA2010 was looming at the time. I got the Bell for a bit more than G-Force pricing.

The fit on the Bell helmets is much better. They fit helmets in baseball cap sizes. So you can get 1/8 or 1/4 size increments. G-Force does S-M-L sizing. I think that is probably the biggest sizing issue. Fit is most important to me.

On the Fabreeze. I did this with my G-Force because the liner is not removable. It does smell much better. I remember reading that you are not supposed to use those sprays on the liner. They remove the fire retardant chemicals from it. Not sure if that is accurate or not.
