What'd you do, slam the brakes going into T1 and back up the field? LOL. Just Kidding!-Kevin
There are people that pull that kind of crap. You will sometimes get guys that will do a brake check coming down to the green.
Since I was on the pole, I had to maintain the pace car speed coming to the green flag. I did pick it up slightly to get the LT1 to 3400 RPM in third gear and held it there. The outside of the front row was another LT1. Behind us were the 4.6L Mustangs. Either they had to run top of 2nd gear or if in 3rd, they were no match for the LT1's...our torque curve is flat and straight.
So it was a drag race into turn one. I knew the Mustangs could not drive up between us. So I just had to get through turn 1 well...not brake to late and over shoot. Brake too early, and next thing you know you are three wide and that is bad.
I got a great jump out of turn 1 while the guys behind me duked it out through 2-5.
There is a lot of thinking and plotting that goes into a start. Especially with equally powered cars, it is very important. This year it has been either starting dead last or on the pole. Starting dead last is a lot of fun, but the best I can do usually is get to second or third at the end of the race.
I think JJ (the race director) caught on to some of us getting a jump on the flag. I had it figured out where we would be when the flag would drop. The last race at Summit, they changed it up and it bit me. I was up two rows and the flag had not dropped. I had to get out of the throttle and that cost me making any ground up before turn 1.
This past race, we were 3/4 way down put road before the green dropped. Usually we were 1/2 way down...
