Good discussion. I've been looking for one. I see no one mentioned the Isaacs devices? Any reason? Last I checked I think for the D2D crowd they were not FIA or something. They seem to also provide some side impact relief?

I didn't mention it simply because Apex did not have that to try this past weekend. They are not SFI rated because it's not a single-point-of-release (whereas all the others' point of release is the harness latch.)

The Defender looks pretty good to me. But the point about it maybe getting hooked during exit from something like a fire is a bit of a concern. Isn't that typical of any HANS-type device?

They both have the rear part behind the helmet that could get caught on a window frame or net, but the HANS has MUCH cleaner side-lines. What I was talking about (and someone else I think) was the harness buckles getting bound up in the Defender's more elaborate harness guides and plastic collar.

I'm do for new seat belts so addressing that will go with the collar. They're are a fair number of Hans ready belts out there now.

Which is something the Defnder touts as a plus... you don't need special belts (which of course, you don't NEED them for the HANS either.)

The back of the HANS can get caught up in your seat, rollbar or car when exiting.

Regardless of either, you need to practice your exiting from the car. NASA will actually run drills...you see your car number posted, head to impound, they inform you to stay strapped in. Then you have 7 seconds through the door or 10 seconds through the window...you pick.

I do suggest you practice and get a little routine. Just do not practice on the drive way.

We are leaving the choice as wide open as possible for your personal preference. Best to try the systems you are considering before buying.
Most people will let you try on their device or stop by APEX's trailer at our next Track Event.

For HPDE's a system that does not need competition
harnesses to work can be a big plus, like for instructors.

For racing you need to read the SCCA or NASA Comp Rules because they may restrict you to SFI or FIA certification.

It depends on what fits you best (physically and financially) and what you plan to do rather than what works for other people.

To answer your question, the new quick release for the HANS was
the deciding factor for me plus the rating just in case I ever get back
into real racing again.

Could I check out an R3 from someone in the club soon?

I need to decide what I want to go with - the R3 appeals to me as something I can wear when I jump in an instructor's car for a ride-along at an event.
