i think some type of switching device is a must. be it a fancy timer like VK used or the toggle switch we wired up for the last race. with the ability to turn it on only when you need it the ice will last much longer. i liked to turn it on occasionally when i needed a relief.

We have a on/off switch as well, but I figured the timer would make the system more of a 'set it, and forget it' type of deal. FYI, this is the programmable 12V timer I used, and yes, I had to order it from the UK.

You can see VK's mail box from outer space now. It even has LEDs powered by a solar collector.
I swear he has a diagram of LEDs for his head stone.

Ha! You remember that huh? The Menthol Gold-Bond has been replaced by Anti-Monkey Butt powder - no monkey butt, no excessive menthol cooling :)

After wearing a Cool Shirt this past weekend at Roebling Road, I am SOLD on them! Within 10 seconds of turning on the pump the first time, I liked it.

Temps all weekend at Roebling with Chump were well into the 90s with the high, high humidity. Like sweating at 7am on a cloudy day humid. It was much better to be in a $500 piece of crap with the cool shirt running and racing around the track with 30 other pieces of crap for two hours, than it was to sit in the paddock in the heat and humidity. I spent a lot of my off-track time this weekend sitting in my truck with the AC running.

I still don't think I need one for the Z06 since about all I do anymore at Time Trials and short stints, but if you are going to spend more than 30 minutes in any car on track, you need one of these.

I knew you would be sold, along with anyone else who has ever used one? We thought we didn't need one either for the first race (back in 2008), but Donnie talked us into on the forum. We were so glad we listened!

So I ordered the portable system. Thinking just having it after a session I could cool down some and not be miserably hot all day. The portable system uses a freon spray can hooked up to the cool shirt. Well the freon lasts about 5-10 minutes of fun then done... It was a nice jolt of cool for a bit but not worth it. So at least I have a real cool shirt. I'll have to go looking on Ebay for these cheap units Jim mentioned. All I see is the expensive ones from cool shirt.

I don't think you need a 2 hour stint in a car to need one. The heat/humidity that we have seen for what seems like months now. That is enough for me. I don't even need it in the car. Just having one in the pit area to cool down from time to time would be nice. Although the thought of having one hooked up in the car would be awesome.

Thanks for that reminder Steve. I roomed with Kevin and the other Harvey at the event where they tried to set their nuts on fire. I got a good chuckle out of it.

Graham, you can build your own if you want to save some money, it's not rocket science. If you already have a cooler, the only real money you need to spend is for the 12V pump, which you can buy at Wal-Mart for about $20.

I've built two systems now, and I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have about how to build one.

Just keep your eyes peeled on Ebay for the "EB Ice" brand. They're made to help people recover from knee or shoulder surgery (or similar), so the pad that's included with the system is not going to be terribly useful for in-car use. But, you can use the connectors to directly connect the coolshirt (~$100) to the cooler pump.

The coolers supplied with the EB Ice systems are pretty small, and would probably only be good for sprint races- but you can easily transplant the whole set-up to a larger cooler. The EB Ice system has a 12 volt bilge pump inside, with 120vAC>12VDC adapter to run it in the house. All you need to do is rig up some wiring to connect it directly to the 12v source in your car and you're good to go. I think most of them come with a box that controls the amount of flow (and thus the temp) of the water flowing thru the system.

As was mentioned earlier in this thread, you should be able to pick up a lightly used EB Ice system for ~$30 or so on Ebay. I bought one not long ago for ~$25 delivered to my door off of Ebay and it was like brand new.

I've seen some guys who made their own cool shirts but IMHO, it's worth it to just fork over the $100 and get one of the Cool Shirt brand shirts.

I know alot of racers that say they don't need cooling.....until they try one then they're kicking themselves for being so stupid( and uncomfortable) for so long.

Bernie's right. The little girl thing comes from your car preferences.

BTW - are you still using that 2 layers/feels like 50 layers Simpson suit I sold you a few years ago? That thing was too hot for January.

BTW, doesn't someone want to build me one of these for $50?

Yes I am. It's about ready to stand up on its own. :P

the cool suit system vk worked out for the lemons car is awesome. the only drawback is the weight of the cooler+water+ice that we have to lug around the track.

with our collective intelligence, anyone have a thought on how to reduce the overall weight? i'm sad to hear graham's account of the freon cans not lasting...those would have been a nice alternative.

the one requirement that negates some common solutions is that we can't touch the cooler during the race. on pit stops you are not allowed to add anything to the car other than a driver and gas. you can't even check tire pressures or wash the windshield on the hot pits.

thoughts?

That and late in the day under braking, the ice sloshing around sounds an awful lot like locking up the tires

at least yours wasn't splashing out and causing your team to get called in for spilling fuel on the track!
