I attended NASA MA's Comp School last Friday.
After the 7:30 driver's meeting we had a little quickie Comp School meeting and were told to show up at class room in our driver gear.
First class room was @ 9:00. After about a 20 minute class room session, we went on track and had a race with a rolling start. 2 or 3 instructors were in the field to check you out. We also had some full course caution exercises. 2 Miatas collided nose to tail in one of these exercises - somebody wasn't watching their closing speed. This sent one guy home.
After another class room session we did a track left only/track right only exercise. Instructors were out running through the field running along side in your blind spot trying to rattle you.
After another class room session we did an exercise were we were paired up and ran side by side with a partner. The first third you ran one side, the switched sides for the 2nd third. The final segment consisted of partners following single file and taking turns passing in Turns 1, 4, 7 and 14.
Following the next class room session we practiced starts - one standing and 2 rolling. The 2nd rolling start continued on with about a 20 minute race.
Then we had to report back to the class room to take a written test. By this time it was about 5:30. After the test, we had to wait upstairs for about 45 minutes. While waiting, we got a lecture about some on track protocols not covered in the classroom. Finally, we were called back into the class room and the test answers reviewed. We were then informed that we all had passed, but couldn't recieve our books until we had flagged 2 sessions. By this time it was 7:30 in the evening.
I think we started with a group of 9 and finished with 6-7 by testing. We only got like 20 minutes for lunch.
The class room sessions weren't quite what I expected. The instructor was Dan Unkefer, who acted more as a mediator host. Rather than review flags and various procedures for on track circumstances, we discussed generalized issues with a Panel of 3 instructors; Chip Stabler, April Curtis and Billy Reavis. Chris Cobetto was also sitting in.
About 1/3 of the way through the day, I was soaking wet. I think what got me through the day was the air conditioning in the class room. Being so wet, you got almost cold in the AC. Also I had Rob Keehner crewing for me. If it hadn't been for him there taking care of the car and helping with the window net, I don't think the school activity would have been as smooth as it was for me. Thanks dude!
WELL I WILL BE DAMNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alright Kevin. glad to see it. wish i could join ya'll you sorry bastage.
