For those of us who couldn't be there... how'd the event go?

Hi Stacy -

I can only speak for myself, but for me the event was great. As a first time track driver, I really enjoyed the weekend. The weather and track conditions could not have been better.

I want to give a huge thanks to my instructor April who was fantastic and made my learning incredibly enjoyable.

I'm amazed at how smoothly & efficiently everything ran - people were where they were supposed to be when they were supposed to be and everything appeared to run without a hitch (from the participant's standpoint at least). This is a huge credit to all the people who worked tirelessly before and during (and probably after) the event.

So a huge thanks to everyone who made my weekend a really fun experience. I'm planning on being there at CMP. Now I just have to learn to heel/toe by June (so if you drive by me on the streets - watch out, that's where I'll be practicing!).

Mo
(and for one night only - GO DUKE!)

I had a great time and liked my instructor. I'm always amazed that somebody is willing to get into my car with me. Eric Hardcastle's most frequent comment was "Gas, Gas, Gas!" I don't hear that a lot. The next was "smooth." He taught me a lot and I got much faster.

I met all of my goals except one. Sean did pass me in the last session. I held him up in the next to last and the caution came out. I started the last session to make a point to the Mazda 3 guy and pitted to get behind David's black Mustang to see his line from 2 to 3. I came out in front of Sean and was doomed in the corners. So, I let him by with the excuse that we were told to dial it down in the last session!

Changing an axle seal Saturday evening wasn't fun, but with Sean's help, it wasn't too bad. One would think they could come up with a better smelling gear oil. Synthetic is a little better, but that stuff really stinks.

This was a first class event.

two of my 888s corded last weekend so i put the good tires in back and ran two free bfg r1s that were in long road racing's garbage pile. not getting a chance to drive north very often i was a little rusty on sat and only managed a 1:51. kept nibbling away on sun, got down to a 1:49.8 (with jason franklin's help riding shotgun) and turned a 1:48.7 in the time trial which made me happy considering the junkyard tires.

Walter,

Are you the driver of the #3 Camaro? If so, I apologize for not putting you back out with the black Mustang. I wanted you to go hard to get in front of that pack since he was bottled in. And then point each of them buy until he was in front of you. Sorry it didn't work out that way.

Well run event as always !! Kudos to the Tarheel Staff and Stewards that keep the event running smoothly. Really different feel to the course trying to get a Miata around it. Shoulder is sore from the point bys

Thanks to all - had a great time !

Walter, did you get a chance to try the line we talked about in "turn two and a half?"

I caught up with him. You couldn't help where you put me in. It worked out great and I was able to practice his line 3 or 4 times.

Thanks.

Yes. That's why I came in and Kevin put me back out. I liked it a whole lot more than the HP line. You were right. Every car is a momentum car.

Speaking of new lines, I learned a valuable lesson this weekend about the appropriate time to try new out new lines and braking zones. It is not a good idea to try out something that's been discussed in the classroom session just after your fastest lap time of the day. Also, Hogpen is not the best place to try new things at 10/10ths. (Also, the Miata is a tough little car.)

I'll apologize to the Blue group for the 5 minutes lost Sunday morning as they pulled me out of the tire wall.

Thanks to Brad Mackey and Kevin Butler (among others) who helped me get the car back in driving shape. The car ran well enough for a couple of slow 'parade' laps in Green group and carried me all the way back to Durham without complaining.

Thanks for the entire THSCC event team for another great (learning) weekend!

I had a blast as always. Great event!

I'll post the TT results this evening. I didn't even unpack the trailer last night. Just went to bed.

Thanks to all for a very smooth event!

Great time! Going back to a stock powered Miata was a real eye opener regarding conservation of momentum. Didn't do so well with it on Sat until during the TT I started going thru T16 w/o braking, but I was still leaving something on the table. The TT results had me a couple of seconds behind Scott Lusted. Let me tell ya, Scott can really wheel a Miata around the track.

Sunday I continued to work on the new process thru 16 - going faster thru it & not over braking for 17 so as to blow the advantage gained. Ron Spencer called me a sissy for being a bit timid going into Stevie Wonder (the blind uphill left hander) :). So that got me pumped up a little more. By the middle of the 2nd session I was flat footed from entering the cross over to the braking zone for Roller Coaster (thanks Ron!).

Went out with Sott for the last session before the TT and showed him my line through 16 & Hog Pen. We swapped back and forth and where pretty much nose to tail the whole session.

Qualifying had me .6 seconds behind Sott for the TT. I was a little nervous about my engine because my fuel consumpion had started to double during the day. Never the less, I was going for it. I knew if I could close the gap on Scott just a little, I had a chance of taking CSP 1st away from him for that day. After running 3 hot laps in the TT I figured it wasn't going to get any better, so I called it quits. I had closed the distance on him on a couple sections of the course, but didn't think I had maintained it to where it counted - the finish line.

The end result was losing to Scott by .022 seconds. But with the 1:55.9 I started with on Sat (qualifying time), I consider a 1:51.3 a major personal improvement. Another really cool accomplishment I think that happened was consistently going through T16 while hitting the rev limiter in 3rd gear. 8)

That's excellent! So far, I've yet to have someone stay with the "HP line" after trying the alternative one. Be prepared, though - you're gonna start putting a whole lot of time on the other cars in your group that insist on straightlining "turn 2.5."
