there is some discussion regarding his actual speed over on the BMW forum. but still the concensus is he was doing well above 130 mph when it went bad.

it is a bolt in cage, with no dash bar from the looks of it. the structural integrity of the vehicle seems to have helped as much as the cage itself.

600+ hp.

Jesus, he broke the steering wheel. I guess maybe with his knee? Tough to say for sure.

This one seems to be getting discussion on about all the various car forums, but that's the general consensus from what I've heard, yeah.

Yikes. That's gonna leave a bruise.

I suppose a bruise is better than a steering-wheel-spoke-shaped gash in the guy's leg. :shudder:

A bolt-in cage wouldn't be my first choice in any car - let alone one with 600HP - but I'm glad that what safety equipment he had worked. Well, except for the steering wheel...

If the guy's wing broke off I can understand the crash. But it certainly sounds like he's trailing the throttle up to the apex in the first left of the esses. Bad idea no matter how much downforce you have. Lift straight and hold steady throttle no matter what when turning.

That's the part the just doesn't make sense to me. He notes that he looks in the mirror at his wing breaking off. Why in the heck is he continuing onward upshifting, full throttle, after the wing departs? He then takes time the cinch his belts sort of like part of him knows there is some serious risk up ahead. I guess that part screams loud enough inside his brain that he lifts entering the esses?

he looked well practiced at road racing. I like the fact he had the presence of mind to pull his hands back off of the steering wheel. Something tells me this may have not been his first time in this situation.... I also agree that the speed doesn't look like 148. I would have expected more pitching, but then again I wasn't there and can't argue w/ it.

he is on the Scooby forum telling the story. he claims he did not hear the wing break off.

Peter Krause has weighed in on Bimmerforums.

Something had to give--better the steering wheel break than his leg. Glad he's OK. Yet another support for "safety first" when preparing a car for that kind of driving.

Right before I viewed that video I was reading about old Alfa's in SCCA racing in the most recent Hemmings Sports & Exotic. Made me cringe to see those driver's heads above topless cars with no safety gear, and only a whiff of a helmet. That Subaru crash, if it happened back then would almost certainly have been fatal even at lower speeds

Don't know if the gears and/or rev limit were changed on this one, but my STi only hits about 130 in 5th. And he had just shifted out of 5th. It also only hits about 95 in 4th. Looked like his 4th gear went way higher than that.

Regardless of actual speed, that would suck.
