That was a damn fun course. One thing the long courses like that really emphasize is looking ahead. Since there is no way you are going to remember it except for key cones. I had a ton of fun but I am completely baked. I am glad that I could help Karl. Hopefully Chris feels like she picked something up from the ride along as well and sorry if I broke your concentration on your last run causing you to DNF, Chris.

I will have video of in a bit. My fastest scratch time was 1.6 seconds faster than my fastest clean run. I missed FTD by 2/10ths to Chris Cline in his STX BMW which was perfectly geared for the course but either way he put down one hell of a drive.

I almost ran out of gas too.

Got me a pint glass though :), although there wasn't much competition in ST since Lee wasn't there to whip my ass like at Tarheel events (and Dave in the pro class ST civic whooped my by ~8 seconds). It was definitely a fun course if not a bit long for my tastes. On one hand, that long of a course is just so long there are so many chances to mes up. On the other hand, for the hack like me, it means there are so many places for me to improve on for my next run, yet somehow I didn't :(

Wes, did they end up giving you a rerun for that cone out of place? A bunch of people on the radio were like "it was still in the box". I was a bit confused, what IS the rule on that one. If any part of the cone is OUT of the box you should still get a rerun right?

Here is the video of my fastest scratch time. Karl was riding with me on this run. It was an 88.3 second run.

The SCCA rule is that even if a cone is misplaced if ANY part of the cone is touching the box (which at National events are drawn about 1" outside of the edges of the cone) it's still considered in the box. Thus, if you stopped for an out of place cone that is not outside of the box, no re-run. - AB

Half the cone was in the box. I always look for cones out of place when I've hit one earlier in the run.

I was actually curious on this one and read the book. It doesn't say anything about "partially" displaced cones and stopping for them, but it does say in 7.9.1 that "If the pylon is upset or totally displaced outside the penalty limit, two seconds will be assessed." That's obviously talking about penalties for hitting cones, but it seems relevant when in 7.9.2 it says "A competitor encountering a downed or displaced cone on course..." To me that seems to indicate that any cone not properly inside the box could be stopped for even if it isn't fully outside. But I don't recall ever hearing about this situation in a protest shed, so it may have precedent some other way.

To me, at a local event, if someone stops for a cone they think is displaced and that sucker is reasonably moved from the box yet still perhaps touching it enough that it wasn't a penalty on whoever hit it, well, I'd grant the re-run and give the driver kudos for the excellent vision/memory/whatever.

Well I drove like a turd. I let a little "problem" with the car get to me and I no longer drove it like I stole it. I don't think there is any "actual" problem with the car other than it needing the water pump replaced (it seems to be a little weepy.) Oh, and the sensor thingy in the thermostat housing needs replaced.

I liked the course, though it would have been maybe a little better if it was three quarters the size.

that was the most fun I've had on the taxiway at Sanford before. Then again, there was a car that came perilously close to the tower, a couple spectacular offs there. Maybe we were having a bit too much fun.

I will say this though. . . I like events that start before 11 oclock (and where the course is set up before 9:30). I got there too early. I want an hour of sleep back. I suppose there was no rush, we were done by 4:30 even with 6 runs.

I can't decide if a 90 second course is "too much of a good thing." Sure was fun though.

I think I found my upper limit...
I know I commented on the forums about our last event at Danville being only 45 seconds. Ironically the very next event I attend is a 96 second course ( for me anyway ). I think that length is my upper limit, especially with 6 runs. I have to agree with other comments that a long course like this forces you to look ahead. I slipped once on one of my runs and found myself of the wrong side of a pointer cone... DNF :x

The taxiway was blast. Top of second gear most of the way down diving in and out of the wide open boxes. The runway fun as well, just not as technical.

I retired a pair of V710s on that course. The rubber started delaminating right down the middle. I'm sure that's why I lost to my nemesis, Keith in his black MINI.

Hey, does anyone know where we might find some pictures from the day?

Ooooo artistic cord!!!! Nice one, David!

Really fun course, wayyyy too long for me to be competitive. If I know nothing else, I know what I need to be competitive. And I really need to be able to think about a course and where I want the car and what it will take to get it there. And this was definitely not the course for that! So, I approached it as a "drill" rather than a competition. Good thing since I couldn't manage to get anywhere close to a clean run. I practiced looking ahead and trying to be aggressive with the car. Consistently broke too much (especially when a lift would suffice - thank you, Keith!) and did not feed in the steering early enough. <sigh> And really, by the 4th run, I was mentally exhausted. Keith got in the car with me and I drove like I had never seen the course before. I just couldn't focus any more. Niiiice DNF within the first 3 seconds of the course.

Apologies to the Branscombs for making them chase the same 2 (or 3 or 4) cones on EVERY run! That was a hella-long, hella-hot worker shift.
