was there an effort made to pair novice's with experienced course workers like in the past? a lot of the bad radio communication seemed to be what you would expect from novices and that paired with the large line and rushed sign up for worker stations had me wondering if that's what had happened.

Yes - we try to. That doesn't guarantee that the novice didn't get the radio.
We could set up a system to designate who gets the radio, but I worry that as soon as we rely on a system, it'll break down on us.
Better IM(very)HO to train *everyone* how to do it properly.

I was a first-timer this past weekend, and got no prep on how to work a station. I was in a group with two other novices, who also didn't get much direction. Maybe there's some oversight on how people sign up?

That said, I'm more than happy to help in other areas than just cone stations. T&S, grid worker, starter--doesn't much matter to me. I'm a pretty smart dude, can learn quickly but need some direction initially...

Has anyone thought of making up duty sheets which outline what workers at each area are responsible for? Would be useful for novices, as some details will surely be skipped in the heat of the moment.

Thanks,
Steve

As novice coordinator with Charlie, I will see if we can touch base with Kendt before the next event and see if we can co-ordinate our efforts with the novices and the course working so maybe that will help. Since I have been a WC in the past I know Kendt's pain

Gwen, I think, mentioned people casually attending the driver's meeting. In some cases, it is not even casual, sometimes in non-attendance and not necessarily by the folks that have been to 50 AX's and have heard the stuff over and over; but the folks who are "novices" and just barely non-novices who really need to be there.

I hate to even suggest this but do we want to make the novice meeting mandatory and use a marker of some kind to make sure they all attend? and/or the driver meeting? Or can we just do some better emphasizing at the novice meeting, driver meeting and before the person gets sent out to battle?

Back to the original issue - is there any downside to making an effort to park the bus in close proximity to the start line? If not, can we formalize this by putting in on an event set-up checksheet, etc.?

I think that we'll make it a point of putting one of you guys in the bus before starting the event to ok the position. As we discussed at lunch today, we could have taken the five minutes to turn the bus 90 degrees and made everything better for T&S.

It wasn't the orientation of the bus, it was distance of the bus from the start and the shallow viewing angle. (Binoculars gave you a better view of the back of the cars in line, not their sides) If we had moved the bus out to the middle of the crossover would have given the T&S workers a better view, as would bringing the start back closer to the bus. I'm sure you had your reasons for keeping the start where it was. The Sanford site forces compromises.
