Steve - That is the reason i wanted to join THSCC. I really enjoy the HPDE's. The classroom instruction, the in-car instructors, the safety of the events, the event schedule itself. Those are great events.

I've attended the CMP last oct, and VIR in Feb (with the wife), and I've since done a couple other track events with various other clubs, and I really enjoy track events a lot. I guess I was hoping to learn a little more about my car control in between those events.

With the auto-x format, I'm guess so busy trying to learn the course, that I'm not really paying any attention to what the car is doing, and it's not helping me acheive my goal for attending.

When I go to HPDE's, and learn a new track, it may take me a whole session just to remember each corner. And it might take me all day to learn a good line (not on paper, but perceiving it on track). Perhaps I'm just a slow learner.

Another benefit I see is that it evens the playing field out accross run groups a bit as far as weather goes. If it rains and/or gets really hot in the afternoon, it doesn't mean that the whole event is won by those who are in the first two run groups. NC weather being as tempermental as it is, I think thats a good thing.

Brice - I think that is a good reason to run split sessions. Coming from a competitive shooting background, I hated when the morning session enjoyed an overcast, and the afternoon session had high winds and sun.

I actually waited to see if it was going to rain this Sunday. According to the forecast, it is not. I'd love to try this in the rain.

i tried two years of autoX Adam. i never really got it exactly right. not even close. learning a course was not an option. i got to the point where i could recognize elements but that was about it.

i got better but as mentioned that was car control i believe. autoX is a wonderful venue to learn the traction and handling capabilities of your vehicle in a relatively slow speed environment.

at the risk of getting my ass torched, i would suggest if you want to learn to be good at autoX you buy a beater Miata. then work your way into the GT-R.

otherwise, go out to the autoX and have fun, gain seat time and kill some cones. tire pressures and temps are for the hard core cone chasers.

Wes. You sure about that? I have heard it is "tradition" more than anything else. Part of the THSCC signature that makes the club different.

Why not take a poll on it and see if members wouldn't like to swap to the conventional method? Maybe let event chairs decide on which way the event will run, split/no-split? Heck, we even changed the run group order once and made stock class go 2 and 4  I think the run groups should get rotated every other event.

People who started AX in this club just get used to the split. The rest of folks who learned elsewhere or run many clubs are used to all at once. So why not change things up a little?

I dunno, I've only autocrossed a couple times in the rain but feel like I learned a hell of a lot about my car in those few times. Its not as fun (thank goodness I usually work in the bus now) but it certainly levels the playing field which makes things interesting. It also makes the ST cars faster, which I naturally like. . .

I don't have a preference either way, but I don't like the thought of trying to manage one setup at one event and another setup at the next event. Either pick the split run groups or go with them all together. Don't make the people running the show have to alternate between the two.

Just like Brice mentioned... I don't think I'd be competitive at all, but I'd learn so much more about my car in the rain. I'm interested in the education part of these types of events. The fun is just a pleasurable side effect.

My wife and I had seriously considered purchasing an auto-x car. Unfortunately I had to get tires, rotors, pads, and fluids for my car, which costs a few bucks.

I agree (although I'm in no way a part of this decision)... But as a driver, I'd want to know what the format would be before I signed up, arrived, etc... Perhaps a year of trying both formats (maybe switch halfway through) and the rest of the members (drivers and officials) might have a preference to one or the other.

Just a suggestion. You guys will put on a good event, either way.

There are pros and cons to both methods. I tend to do better with all four runs at the same time, but I do like the socializing of having the runs split up.

If the runs are all together, I don't think it is fair if street tire classes always have to run first in the morning to get the grit/water off the course and because its not typically hot enough for the race tire classes to get the grip they want.

Just curious, what is the order of the classes at a National event? Do they switch up at all?

AFAIK, every event has a different run group order.

 Yes it is... But it is worth every penny.

I'm getting ready to do it all again.
