I saw that Jim Feinberg won DS in the Dixie National Tour event last weekend. http://scca.com/popup/raceresult.aspx?e ... 0&file=561

For the FS fans, Strano won again. (If at home, turn up your speakers.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfOjGDXw1h8

Anybody have a report on the event?

At the top of that page linked above, there is a tiny pdf link with the full data: http://scca.com/documents/resultfiles/Sunday%20Final%20-%20R3.pdf

Also, it's a bit spastic, but here is a bulls-eye view of the course: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMWckMtMLkY

It was a good event. Only a small handful of Tarheelers there: Feinberg, Spratte and myself, IIRC.

The courses were good, but really favored smaller speed maintenance cars. I still liked the courses even though I needed to be more aggressive in the C6 (yet smoother). Here is a video of my first run. Cold tires early and getting on it too aggressively at the finish lead to 13 total cones on the run (although I only got credited with 10). I'm just glad I didn't stuff it into the trees/fence. Please excuse the wind noise :)

Dixie Tour Run 1 Day 1

Now, here is my last run of day 2. It's pretty obvious I've gotten more comfortable in the car and aside from a bad bus stop turn and the 3rd from the last turn setting up the finish, it was a pretty solid run that was 47.564 clean.

Dixie Tour Day 2 Run 3

After a terrible day one (after nearly stopping completely in the bus stop, I charged the last sweeper and just coasted to the finish) I recovered fairly well to the 5th fastest clean run on Sunday.

There are some adjustments to the car we will need to play with and a lot of getting used to have so much power/torque at ANY rpm. All in all, Bryan finishing 5th (one spot out of the trophies) and me 8th is a good first event. We only had the Triad T&T for any other runs in the car. Granted, in 5th place, Bryan was over 4 seconds behind Matthew Braun. He can really wheel that Elise and the course was very favorable for it. In a Vette, he probably would have only beaten us by 3 seconds! :D

We'll be making the 20 hour trip to Lincoln, NE for the ProSolo on 5/2-5/3 to get a better idea on a Nationals setup and to see what is supposed to be a spectacular site. - AB

I don't have anything all that interesting to report. David and I both felt very rusty not having auto-x'd at all this year. I hadn't been to an event since very early December and I think David's last event was Sanford with Tarheel last October? Sanford was also the last time the Type R had seen vTaK (or maybe it was the NCAC, I forget the order) so it hadn't moved much all winter either.

David seemed to shake off the rust faster than I did and he put down a blistering time on the Friday practice course besting my fastest time by 2 tenths. Even after 4 practice runs each, we were still a bit out of sorts for some reason and sitting around in grid prior to our Saturday runs felt a tad surreal. I guess it's not often that you start the year with a National event.

We were supposed to run 3rd heat but I guess they needed to even out the runs groups so we got bumped to run the 1st heat. It was in the low 60's and rather damp/misty which certainly isn't conducive to good grip. There were tons of spins in the first set of runs and unfortunately David was a victim of that as well. I went out very tentatively as a result of watching David's first run and never really felt comfortable in the car.

The rest of the runs felt a little better and even though we ran in the damp first heat both days, we were lucky enough to dodge the rain. I also seemed to continue my cone issues from the end of last season but that isn't anything a good SoloPro school couldn't cure. :)

The site is known to improve by as much as a full second as the day goes on and, considering the conditions of the first heat, it may have been even more this weekend. I could even tell the difference between the first and last runs both days and I was pretty happy where I ended up in the overall PAX list as a result.

All in all, it was good to see a bunch of familiar faces and have a good time away from the winter work grind. Like Aaron and Bryan, I'll be making the trek out to Lincoln for the Pro to check out the new Nationals site. I'm also thinking of heading out to the Houston Tour but the thought of 2 nearly 20-hour drives (one way!) about a month apart makes my head hurt. We'll see...

Jim
