I don't have anything all that interesting to report. David and I both felt very rusty not having auto-x'd at all this year. I hadn't been to an event since very early December and I think David's last event was Sanford with Tarheel last October? Sanford was also the last time the Type R had seen vTaK (or maybe it was the NCAC, I forget the order) so it hadn't moved much all winter either.
David seemed to shake off the rust faster than I did and he put down a blistering time on the Friday practice course besting my fastest time by 2 tenths. Even after 4 practice runs each, we were still a bit out of sorts for some reason and sitting around in grid prior to our Saturday runs felt a tad surreal. I guess it's not often that you start the year with a National event.
We were supposed to run 3rd heat but I guess they needed to even out the runs groups so we got bumped to run the 1st heat. It was in the low 60's and rather damp/misty which certainly isn't conducive to good grip. There were tons of spins in the first set of runs and unfortunately David was a victim of that as well. I went out very tentatively as a result of watching David's first run and never really felt comfortable in the car.
The rest of the runs felt a little better and even though we ran in the damp first heat both days, we were lucky enough to dodge the rain. I also seemed to continue my cone issues from the end of last season but that isn't anything a good
SoloPro school couldn't cure.
The site is known to improve by as much as a full second as the day goes on and, considering the conditions of the first heat, it may have been even more this weekend. I could even tell the difference between the first and last runs both days and I was pretty happy where I ended up in the overall PAX list as a result.
All in all, it was good to see a bunch of familiar faces and have a good time away from the winter work grind. Like Aaron and Bryan, I'll be making the trek out to Lincoln for the Pro to check out the new Nationals site. I'm also thinking of heading out to the Houston Tour but the thought of 2 nearly 20-hour drives (one way!) about a month apart makes my head hurt. We'll see...
