Now I know we have some talented photoshoppers in the club, can't we make a simplified (printer-friendly) version of a google earth satellite image for each site and use that to overlay the course maps on?

I should mention -- my XLS versions of Sanford and Laurinburg sites DO use a scaled google map of the sites -- it's just only scaled in the x-axis so everything is compressed:

What's a course map?

Seriously though, I'm of the opinion that the only valuable course map is the one you make in your head.

the only time i find them useful now is to determine when entry into an element is optional and when helping novices after a run. when i was a novice, i found the maps very helpful in memorizing the course.

I don't use 'em often either, but I could have used one to refer to of the back section yesterday (so I guess I should have drawn one during my 3 course walks :P ). I DNFed my first run as I looked over my left shoulder while passing the first "hole" I was supposed to go through and saying out loud, "Oh, s***, there's that hole." Then I had to flag down Dustin and have him run through that kink section for me. I just couldn't keep a clear mental picture of that back section yesterday.

GPS has made maps obsolete. So the event chairs need to come with a digital version of their courses that they can give the drivers to upload into their GPS. "Turn Left" - "NOW Quick Right" - "Now Left" - "REcalculating" - "Make U-Turn at end of Runway" - Recalculating
