Other than Chris Peterson, no other Tarheelers did much to brag about at the Toledo Pro Solo.

Not only did Chris get her first Pro Solo win in L1, she was faster than all of the guys in A Stock open on the right side. She went into Sunday morning down by about 0.08 and had to battle as the #1 driver kept getting faster too - it was a lot of fun to watch.

Dave O'Malley from Triad won SS and did some awesome driving.

Congrats Chris! Beating out Roberts *in the same car* on the right side is extremely impressive!!!

Oh, I don't know about that. Talking my way out of a ticket after being clocked at 80mph and accelerating (in a 55 zone) before disappearing around a bend while performing a "ricer flyby" complete with blinking hazards on a stickered-up Z06 in an equally stickered-up Type R with no muffler may qualify as one of my greatest achievements ever. :D

Chuck,
I'm sure others can give you a much more technical description, but I'll give you my take on the courses. They were not like any I've ever seen at a Pro. There was basically NO transition and lots of sweepers. The gearing was darn near perfect for cars like the STi, MR2, and Solstice and absolutely HORRIBLE for cars like the S2000, ES Miata, and, I think, the Type R, among others.

Every time I wanted to get the power down, it was time to break. The corners were painfully slow, rewarded patience and KILLED you for the next 2 to 3 corners if you tried to dive bomb them. <voice of experience>

Most were not very happy with the courses, saying that the site is much more fun (re: transitions!!) when they lay out the course going in the opposite direction. In other words, the site is a huge rectangle. The course was laid out using the short top/bottom and long on the sides (landscape). The fun way is apparently long top/bottom and short on the sides (portrait).

Thanks Chris, and congrats again. Hey, I saw you were on Hoosiers for the event! :) I've been worried since the Extreme School that my biases I told you about that day might adversely affect you (i.e. the V710/A6 stuff we were talking about), but I can see that worry was for nothing now! :D Good job. That part about rewarding patience reminds me so much of those various slow corners we all worked on at the Extreme School, especially when they pinched them tight -- that repeated practice was instrumental for me to improve my driving and help extinguish some baggage I've carried for a couple of decades too long.

Chris summed up the courses very well. I can't say that I hated them but they were definitely on the slow side and featured mostly 90-degree turns. I haven't looked at the data yet but I'd be surprised if I spent more than 3 seconds in the power band during a run. And that time was spent very low in the power band.

I honestly thought I drove very well and I didn't feel like I left more than a couple of tenths out there this weekend. I never felt like I got behind the course and even if I found everything, I still would have been 4th in class just behind the Mazdaspeed3. The chances of matching the BMW or VW's times were virtually nil.

General Custer and the Battle of Little Bighorn springs to mind for some reason...

Chris absolutely rocked L1. It was awesome.

Chris and Jim captured the course very well. No transitions to speak of, pretty slow, and the S2000 Eric and I drove was geared about as poorly as it could possibly have been.

I'm not sure how Sunday shook out, but after Saturday, I was 0.9 off Eric, who was ahead of Joe Tharpe - fastest of the AP2s at Nationals last year. So, to be in that kind of company this past weekend, I was pretty happy. Cut mostly great lights all while sidestepping the clutch at 7500RPM (!!).

I had a great, great time at Toledo. Next time you're at an event, make sure you've kept track of your number of available package checks.
