Ok, CCR is still working on options, and looking for input. Either option would likely occur mid to late October.

1) The Continental Tire Lot outside Charlotte
2) The Michelin proving grounds near Laurens, SC.

Laurens is ~1.5 hours SW of Charlotte, however is supposed to be a "sea of asphalt" with absolutely no obstructions and infinate course configuration possibilities.

The Continental Tire lot is supposedly not a spectacular site, but if they get things arranged as planned, could be pretty decent.

So with that in mind, please answer the poll

Are they totally opposed to doing it at the Greensboro Colosseum? I know that site has issues, but I know CCR and Triad have worked together in the past and it's centrally located in NC.

They tried to do it in Laurens 4 years ago.

I notice 83 drivers competed in that event.

I think there were scheduling issues with the Coliseum this year around the time they wanted to host the event.

Laurens is *huge*. Probably twice the size of HPT's pad if not more if my fuzzy memory is still working. It should be easy to find on Google Earth.

Heck, I run over Wes' imaginary girlfriend to run there again...

That wasn't at Laurens. That was at the Greenville Braves Stadium in SC.

Mine's not an easy answer, but if it's a good site and there's a good number of AS drivers going to be there, I'm in.

Strangely, this would probably have me staying at home. Years ago I went out there pretty regularly. And my memory is nothing but mickey mouse, 1st gear, 30 second courses. That, and twin turbo RX-7s crashing into berms way off course.

Ugh.

Laurens is a pretty darn good site. Last time we ran there, it was at least 1000 degrees and I had morning sickness. Time before that it was raining and cold. Sure would like to try it in better conditions! Depending on when it is, I'm pretty sure Eric and I would be interested!

Either one is fine with me.

I ran at the Continental site for the 24 Hours two years ago. Rob Falkner set up a good and challenging course there, especially considering it's not a large site. Grid space may or may not be a problem depending on number of entries.

The Laurens site is awesome and I'd love to run there. Hopefully they'd get a good course designer (Falkner, Rankins, or someone like that to make sure the long drive is worth the cost/time of driving down there).

Just my 2 cents.

Eric

I'm open for anywhere, but I would prefer a site that isn't a postage stamp size 1st gear type of thing too (at least the Sat course in 2006 at Greensboro was for the most part).

Jackie has done tire testing at the Laurens site with the GA Tech FSAE team this past year, and she thinks the site is great. She said there is a building with bathrooms right next to the site they used. I just looked at it on Google Earth, and the main area I think measures out to a bit over 1500 feet long by about 500 feet wide which is about 17 acres of space. There should be more than plenty of room for an excellent course and also parking, etc.

If you want to look at it in Google Earth, it is at 34º23'18.25"N, 82º1'27.76"W. That is the huge area where she did tire testing anyway. The rest of the facility is more of a test track.

I'm guessing the less hard-core autocrossers will not want to drive that far, but I'm definitely up for Laurens. Charlotte is fine too.

Here's the goole maps link to the Laurens' site (I assume this is it):

You wouldn't run over the birthday girl, would you?

I'll make the drive either way and get donkey punched by Jeremy Cox in CSP. Again.

I was at the Laurens site about 3 or 4 years ago when they claimed it would not be able to be used anymore. It is one freaking huge square of asphalt. I agree with Eric that if they do it there it would be a shame if they didn't have a good designer. The course for the regional that was set up was pretty cool, fast, technical and not one that we get a chance to drive very often since we are so airport centric.

It is out in the middle of freakin' nowhere and if I remember correctly the Michelin folks made us pick up every bit of rubber left on the course.

Depending upon dates I'd probably go there.....

Actually, maybe we could run the road course too, make it the NCAC/HPDE/AX/skidpad challenge
