I am curious as I have always wanted to run a shifter kart but none of the clubs I have ever run with SCCA or not have ever run karts with the exception of National events. I know there is extra insurance needed and is that the reason why no one seems to let them run. TIA

This has come up in the past and the answer was always no. I don't know what the current policy is, however. As an old kart racer myself, I can't imagine running one at any of our sites with the exception of Greenville and possibly Sanford. Laurinburg? No thanks!

The Atlanta region has a few regular karters FWIW.

IIRC, its an insurance thing and a bit of a logistical headache.

I would think Sanford and Greenville would be fine. Danville wouldn't be too bad but Laurinburg would be a big no on running a kart. I did a bit of karting when I was younger so I know what it is like on a rough surface. I do know insurance always seems to be the reason why no one is willing to run them. Something about if you run shifters you need to pay for the junior karts as well and that makes prices sky rocket.

I know I am just one person but it really sucks. I have run in 2 previous regions and their answer was always no due to extra insurance costs as well. The logistics are not really bad, yes it adds time because no cars can be on course when karts are running. As Cline said insurance people ruin everything.

Sorry to bring old news up again, I just have wanted to run a shifter for a couple years but no one lets them run.

Danville has some spots that if you hit them wrong, you could easily be "launched". It may seem smooth but the next time you are out there, pay close attention and you'll see what I'm talking about. The course could be designed to avoid those spots but that is a lot of trouble and limits potential creativity.

Keith,

Just buy Rob Harvey's FSAE car. It's like a kart, but with some serious power.

Oh, and it just happens to be for sale right now.

Well considering I wouldn't be able to buy something until later in the year that is kind of a moot point. Out of curiousity how much does he want for it?

Another reason that SCCA clubs usually can't allow carts is because a larger site is needed to allow for the increased safety setbacks that are required.

I can't remember what he said at the meeting. It seemed reasonable IIRC.

I seem to recall he was asking 3500. But I'm old and that’s the beauty of Alzheimer’s, you're always negotiating new prices.
