Is there anybody with a rulebook out there that can clear something up for me? According to Moutons, all 318 BMW’s not otherwise classified are in FSP while all 3-series 16v BMW’s are in DSP. OK, given that all 318’s in the US from ’89 on used either the M42 or M44 engine which are both 16v, you would think they are classed in DSP, correct?

This is the part I don’t understand: Russell Blume (who, according to his sig., is the ’01 DS national champ in his ’91 318is) is listed as running in FSP at the ’03 nationals. According to the results, he is running his ’91 318is. Is that just a misprint in the results and he is driving another car or did the ’91 318is get reclassed and Moutons didn’t get updated properly? Or since he didn’t finish that well, did nobody bother to check his classing?

I’m really just curious if the M42-based 318i(s) got reclassed or something. Anybody with any ideas?

Jim,

According to my 2003 rulebook the classing is as you state.

However, if you go to the on line results and entry lists for FSP you will see that Russ drove car 187 (presumably a codriver for car 87). Car 87 is a VW. The entry list shows somebody else as the driver for that car. It is common in SCCA results and entry lists for previous car information to be used . . . probably due to use of old info in databases OR the entrant not changing the info. GH Sharp used to show up in the "wrong car" many times.

If you need a better answer you can look through all the online Fast Tracks for the year. :D

Thanks Dick, that would make a lot of sense. I kinda figured something like that happened but was somewhat hopeful they decided to reclass the 16v 3-series. Not that I had anything up my sleeve... :)

I seem to recall something on a forum somewhere that his car was broken and that he was going to have to codrive at Nationals. So what you probably saw was his original registration information. I don't know him or anything, it just sounds familiar.
