That sounds about right. The only why to offset some of the cost is to have a co-driver. That only really helps with fuel and lodging. With two drivers, you go through tires twice as quickly.
To be competitive you really need a new set of tires for every couple of national events. The top drivers will have them, so you need them. You can use the tires with 20 runs on them for local events.
If you are hooked on the big events, figure you need the exhaust work and possibly custom shocks. The top drivers have them, so you need them
Atlanta is close by. You will need to budget in vacation time. For most events, you need to leave Thursday night and find lodging Thursday night too. If you are really tough, you can make the run back Sunday night and report to work on 2-3 hours of sleep. How much are 6-8 days of vacation worth driving a noisy, rough riding car to some god forsaken location that the locals don't even know exist? Say each vacation day is worth $600.
The list goes on and on...I have the Visa debt to show what it cost over 7 years
I would guess each National event will run you on the north side of $1000 (tires, lodging, food, misc) not including car prep amortization or vacation.
When I sold the MR2, the bed of my Silverado was full of tires mounted on rims (and I mean full). I had unmounted tires packed in the backseat area and crammed into the front seat....all the spare parts where in the MR2 itself.
Am I sorry I did it? Not really. I gave it shot and competed at the Nationals 3 years (always finished mid-pack though), got as high as third in the country in the national rankings a few years back for ES and made a lot of friends along the way. It took me a long time to realize that $1000 for 6 minutes of competition was a bit out of my ballpark. And it is hard to have local events give you that rush of competing against Roberts, Piccone, Cashmore, Brown, Newhard, etc.
I really think the experience paid off on track.
