Trust me, it will be all text...

I've actually never met the guy. I have gridded within a few cars of him a couple of times, though. I think some of it might have rubbed off on me but I'm hoping the shots I took will clear that right up. :|

Keep us posted on how things go with the R1s Chuck. They're available in the right sizes for my S2000, and even though I'm blessed with a car that wears tires nice and evenly, the wear rate is pretty punishing on the checkbook. I'm on pace to spend $3600 on tires this year at this rate. Not to imply that I expected an A Stock car to be cheap to run, but...damn.

Will do. I will have them on the car at Danville next month. Jackie and my son, Andy, will have already scrubbed them in at the BMW Performance center autox, so hopefully I learn something from them about how they perform there. I'm taking the M5 to that event, so I won't have a chance to drive on the R1s until Danville. :x My "budget" for car activities gets complicated as I'm driving two different cars while autocrossing and tracking -- between tires and brake pads it does add up quickly. Once I get the suspension finished on the M5 (been waiting on Jay at Ground Control to finish his new Koni front strut design), I think I might autox it some more as it is a heck of a lot more fun to drive than the 330i.

Man, you've been out of the game for a while, huh? The new "cheater" tires are made by Bridgestone. Unfortunately, the smallest size is 15" so that may preclude you from getting a set assuming you are running 14" stock rims. Or did the Celica come with 15"'ers?

No doubt. I thought the new Azenis RT-615 just made the older RT-215 cheater tire that much better. The car has newer rims on it. They are Toyota 15x7" 5 spoke rims with 205/55-15 Bridgestone Potenza RE910s on them. I read the owners manual and it says 14" with something like 195/70-14 and 15" with 205/50-15 on 1990 models, except the All-Trac versions. They have something else.

What I found so far is the 90-91 models are unique 5th gens. There aren't a whole lot of go fast goodies for them. Some better Koni yeller struts for it that are adjustable. Then tires. I have more reading to do.

When you say newer rims, do you mean that they were available with the car or they came from another model? You mentioned HS so I'm assuming that size was available as an option?

While the Bridgestones are a great tire, I think the Azenis are a little faster at full tread and in cold conditions. I'm not sure how they compare in the wet yet but my current set of full tread Azenis seemed to handle fairly massive downpours without complaint. My old "street" 215's had me slowing down to ~45mph with the hazards blinking traveling along the highway in a heavy rain and even that was pushing my luck. I could easily spin the front tires in 5th gear at ~1/2 throttle! I've been told by a few reliable sources that the Bridgestones ride a lot better than the Azenis if that matters.

You can get a set of 195/50-15 Bridgestones for ~$117 each which is definitely more than the Azenis but the current $100 rebate takes the edge of that. If I had to buy a new set for dual use, I'd lean towards the 'Stones but that is mostly due to the rebate. No rebate and I'm back in the Azenis camp...

I'm not sure they are from a 1990. They are OEM Toyota rims for a Celica. From looking at the options on Edmunds. They listed 2 different wheel types. The tire info in the owners manual states either the 195/70-14 or 205/55-15. The 14" wheels I believe were the steel ones. Aluminum were 15" (an option). These are aluminum. The manual says all except the AllTrac cars. So that covers ST, GT, GTS. This one is a GT. I'm still doing research to make sure they are legal.

My biggest problem with it at the moment is remembering it's a 5sp and not a 6sp. Every time I get on the highway I get ready to go for 6th. Pulling that shifter straight back from 5th would be bad, very bad...

So which Stones are you referring to? I see Avon Tech M500 on closeout for $59/ea. I'm kinda liking that.

These.

They don't have the 195/50-15's listed yet but if you call them you can get them. They are $117 a piece minus the $100 rebate which comes to $368 total without shipping. My shaved set (4/32's) was $514 shipped to Mark at Hubcap Heaven not including the rebate.

Those Avons are definitely cheaper but I know most people that tried them weren't that happy with them. That is purely from an AutoX perspective so if you're looking at them as a pure street tire, they might just be the ticket at that price.
