I believe that has been pursued in the past. I'm sure someone else has the intel on what happened there. I think we also tried to get the Raleigh Police training grounds also to no avail.

This whole process of finding sites and all is a pain everywhere these days! The BMWCCA down in Atlanta had a great site a Lake Lanier Islands (the water park parking lot there which was very large with a nice elevation change feature), but they repaved it and after the first autox I assume they didn't care for the tire marks everywhere over the white lines). Hence they hunted like crazy and found a nice site at Stone Mountain park. The pavement was a bit rough in places, but it was decent and with a great view :). I did an autox there with Jackie and Ash last November ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVBkXtBNoNk&feature=g-all-u&context=G20cd4e4FAAAAAAAAAAA ).

There first event of the year was scheduled in a couple of weeks, but I just got this email:

Quote:
The SCCA ran an event two weeks ago at Stone Mountain Park that has caused the loss of that site for AX due to noise and an accident. As you know we ran a pilot event at Stone Mountain last November that met their criteria for safety and noise. The recent SCCA event has caused the loss of this site for the BMW CCA, the PCA and any other AX organization.

Registration for both AX1 and Novice School have been suspended. We are scrambling trying to find an alternative location for the events.

So just a heads up I guess...if the club can secure a new site, hopefully we can keep it to ourselves and not suffer a similar fate. :? :x

VIR has a small skid pad, why are there not events there for autocross? Is it too expensive?

It's way too expensive, way too small, and has way too many hard things all around it. :?

Chuck,
How exactly does that work? I was told recently by one of the guys who works corners at VIR that they weren't allowing corner workers near track to chase cones. That we wouldn't be allowed to have cones on track for that reason. Have they come off of that policy?

After doing the DC Pro this past weekend with all the elevation changes, I think I'd be interested in doing an actual autox on Patriot.

This was at the BMW CCA Oktoberfest in 2005, so perhaps VIR has changed what they will allow since then. However, we did not have VIR employed corner workers. We just had "normal" course worker assignments just like any other autocross. If you look on the right in that picture, you can see where a group of workers is standing. The Triad Sports Car Club supported the CCA for this event. The course was actually very well laid out, limiting speeds where appropriate (for an autox) yet still allowing for a very fun event.

Perhaps someone with Triad would have more knowledge of running an event on Patriot like this again. I imagine it would be pretty expensive to rent since I'm sure that the CCA rented all of VIR that week, so Patriot was simply "there" in the midst of all the events going on. Outright renting the course for an autox is probably a $1500 or more cost just for course rental I would guess.

If I had to guess, I'd say multiply that by at least 2 if not 3.

I agree, if it were $1500 that would be unbelievably awesome. Then again, half the club (ala THS2kC & all the Miatae) wouldn't be able to run so I'm not sure we'd get enough entries to cover the expense.

While we're on the topic, I haven't heard back from Chris yet in regard to the October event possibly being held as co-event down at Cherry Point with NCR. Details to come when I get more info...

Having previously done dumb things does not justify continuing to do them.

And the Belk Warehouse lot was too big?

That place had plenty of hard things to hit and was the size of a postage stamp. It was never a dull event!

So why is that skid pad too small again?

It is really small, even smaller than Belk so combine that with the cost and the chance of hitting stuff it wouldn't work. I cringe when I think we drove around that lot with the trailers to the side and the fencing around it

VIR skidpad is VERY small for an autocross...too small. It's 280' x 280' with concrete barriers right along the edge of 1/2 of it. Totally unusable. Greenville is over 700' x 240' or so, and although everyone agrees it is "small" too, it is vastly larger than VIR's skidpad.
