the triangular area on the right is a field that's across the road.

highway 70 is at the bottom of the photo, and the open area just above the trees/"south" is the rallyx area - grass, with low, rolling hills.

the backward L that is next to the road is area for trucks to pull into/ turn around in next to the road, and a 4-lane access road is the bottom of the backward L. looks like those are tractor trailers parked diagonally on the section next to the road. the autox area would be in between the rectangular areas, with are buildings. it's pretty huge, from what I saw - a guard walked out to greet me, so i just waved & left. I got as far as the small sqare at the left of the backward L.

To Wes - I'm not expecting anything out of this. It would be nice to find out, though. Are you suggesting that we don't even approach them about it? :?

And about the rallyx area, it appears it might be a nice place for a rallyx, but it is right next to a road, & there would be plenty of people complaining about dust & noise. So I'm not even considering that Miles might ask about that.

It's funny you mention the Winn-Dixie site Jim. My wife pointed it out to me as we were going to look at houses in that area. We thought then that it would make a great site. And with W/D filing for bankruptcy today, maybe it will become available.

Kevin and others, thanks for the info on directions. I will certainly ask about it.

There is a pattern however with commercial real estate. I've tried to get several locations in the past when major properties were up for sale. It hasn't worked out yet, and for fairly obvious reasons. I was very close on one big one though.... so for a site that is truly worthwhile, I'm willing to put in the legwork.

WD vacated that site about 9 months ago. The other site to follow up on is the Mudcats' stadium. The rumor was they were planning on paving the parking lots. Anyone over in that area?

VMSC was able to score the use of large lot in Richmond, VA. The kicker, it is at a high school. Now that is impressive.

Mudcats parking lot was UN paved when I went by there late last year. I will check again the next time I go by there. I highly doubt it is.

There also is the old Pepsi plant on Six Forks Road, I know it in the middle of town :(

Since hockey is on strike and their season is shot. Maybe we could approach the RBC again. Maybe they're getting a little more pressed for cash...

Seems plausible. They've got to be looking at a huge revenue loss with no hockey season. Of course our meesly $$$ won't even make a dent in that. Still something is better than nothing in my book.

RBC gave us a list of requirements we would have to meet before they would even consider letting us run there, and even then, there was no guarantee. This "list" was generated during a meeting held last year between RBC Management and myself, Mike Whitney and Bowie Gray.

This list was then analyzed by the THSCC administration last year. By choice, or by default, we have so far chosen as a club not to pursue that list. I cannot go back to RBC about running there until we have begun to address those requirements. Some items would definitely increase our event costs.

Also, it isn't a matter of revenue. Our night series cost didn't even pay for the lights. They lost money on us every time they cut the lights on.

As for the money they get for the one day event, yes, that's a little more, but I suspect it barely covers their overhead. Us running there isn't a matter of them needing our paltry dollars. It is viewed by their insurance company as a risk and a liability to have us there. We were allowed to run there simply by the good graces of RBC management. They don't need us. And when their insurance company identified us as an uncacceptable risk, it was time for them to say goodbye.

If you have questions about this situation, please email me or call me, or talk with one of the senior officers. I prefer not to get into details here.

No, not a secret, but we were hesitant to talk about it a lot since it needed some clear leadership. Since I'm not an officer any more, I can prod a little without fear of generating more work for myself :) :

It was basically an insurance issue for the RBC center. Since they are partially publicly funded, they need to re-bid insurance every year. 2004's insurance company saw something about "racing" on their event roster and shut us down.

The RBC folks are great people, very upfront and logical. They "offered" to come-back to the insurance company with a proposal, which we figured would have to include among other things:

- A complete emergency action plan. This is something we have dabbled in but no one has sat down to do completely. It would have to have things like - who gets called when for what, who's in charge of handling emergencies, etc, etc

- Emergency vehicles on site (the big cost adder).

- Why we're qualified to be doing what we do, and how we're different than a bunch of street racers tearing around a parking lot.

- Event logistics and safety information

There was some other stuff but my memory's fuzzy right now. Basically, faced with the challenge of putting this stuff together (which feels far too much like work), we just let it slide. Now if there is someone out there who wants to champion this cause, well, hey, I bet the officers would love to hear a plan :)
