At least at the local level? For example, could you run a CS car in BS or a CSP car in BSP? With the only reason is to have more competition in an undersubscribed class. Would the car be eligible for the higher class' year-end points?

I don't think that would be acceptable (my opinion).

You can run an *underprepared* car in a higher class (a CS Miata in CSP for example), but not a higher class just because (CS Miata in BS).

Remember, PAX isn't a SCCA thing, and most people appear to think that it's worthless, so without PAX, how on earth would you know what class to run in?

The SCCA bumping order doesn't follow the index at all...

Scott

I'd have to look in the rule book to be sure about stock class, but I do believe you can run your car in any class it is legal in. I ran DSP in our legal GS car at the Petersburg pro solo for example. There was just a discussion on the SCCA forum about a legal FM car that ran AM at all the west coast pro solos. There have been a number of legal stock and SP Corvettes running in SM2 in 2003 events. I think one even won the national championship this year.

Jim - "Bumping" would essentially do for you what you propose... putting you in a higher subscribed class. However I agree with Scott and Charles about the "legality" of it. If the car doesn't class by itself in class XX, then it shouldn't be run there. Run in your appropriate class and let the bump order take care of class size... (or convince some people to come over to open class).

Chuck has it right. A Stock-legal car can run in its appropriate SP, P, M, or SM class, but not in some other class (eg. a Neon could not choose to run in ES, CS, etc). However, as Diane mentioned, you might get bumped into such a class for trophy purposes if your chosen class is too small.

Thanks for the input everybody. The instance I was thinking of wasn't totally out in left field but I can see the potential pitfalls. I was thinking of a case where there were two cars (or more) that shared the same body but were classed differently due to horsepower and chassis differences. Like, say, an e36 M3 -vs- an e36 325is, or a regular Civic -vs- a Civic Si or a Celica GT -vs- a Celica GT-S (if I got the Celica models correct).

Jim
- who will have to forget his plans of running a BMW 2002 against a e46 M3 for now..... :)
