I know it's other organizations' responsiblity to work their schedules around THSCC's plans, but could we make an exception and move the June autocross out one week? I'd really like to attend the VIR Gold Cup Vintage races, since it's the 50th anniversary of the opening of the track and they have Carroll Shelby serving as the event Grand Marshall.

Event info:
http://www.virclub.com/vir/index.php?op ... Itemid=161

Plus, they have a special participatory event hosted by Bert Levy, the author of The Last Open Road, Montezuma's Ferrari, and Potside Companion, The Fabulous Trashwagon and Toly's Ghost http://www.racingpilot.com/productCat8096.ctlg
It includes an autocross on the Patriot Course, so I think we should make it a point to dominate that event as a club.

I would love to go to this also. I've met Carroll before and would love to meet BS Levy. Plus, it would be fun to see the Tarheelers take all the wood at the autocross!!!

OK, my two cents worth-can we make it the 24th? Keeps Roebling/TSCC/and NCR on the 3rd out of the mix. WOW! FOUR autoXs in one month-my dream come true! (Bernie will be @ Roebling 15th-17th , of course.) Seriously, I’m with Todd, I’ve wanted to do an autoX on Patriot ever since I read about one the BMW club did a couple of years ago.
I wouldn't mind being able to say I've met Carroll Shelby, as well.

Art, thanks for sharing. I'll definitely have to add this on the calendar. As Gwen said, how often do you get to autocross and attend an event like this at VIR.

I knew I was overlooking something: the track event that's not listed on the club calendar. Anyway, I still think the autocross portion would be a neat thing to do. If we could interest our club's autocross hot shoes (and you know who you think you are), we could utterly annihilate, not to mention demoralize and utterly humiliate, any and all challengers. I have to admit that the touring laps and road rally don't interest me much, and they probably won't have an "early domestic neglected" class in the car show for me to enter.

I'll look into the specifics and report back.

3 runs on Patriot course with stupid cones all over the place for $125.

Or:

https://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_even ... ent_id=489

at least 12 runs on Patriot course without stupid cones for $90. Hmmm...

:D

Nothing related to motorsports is cost effective. Nothing. This is a little bit less cost effective, but you get an audience. Maybe. They might all be off watching the cool race cars and sports cars that competed in the days before Subarus grew turbos. That's the real reason for going up there anyway that weekend.

That said, the reply I got from VIR this morning wasn't very helpful: "Please check out our website" and "we have
not finalized plans for Gold Cup". So, I think we can table this for a few weeks, until either (a) VIR posts some more detailed info, (b) a lot of folks say they are interested, or (c) the club officers say "let's do it" or "no way".

All I was saying was that I see it as a waste of money to run a coned-up Patriot course when you can run it with NASA on a different date for less and get a lot more runs. I didn't say it was the whole point of going to VIR that weekend. And there will be an audience at the NASA event, not that I will give a crap about anything that's going on outside the fence.

If I go to this event, it will be to watch the cool stuff that's going on.

At the BMWCCA Oktoberfest back in Sept 2005, they had the Triad Sports Car Club setup a cone'd autox on the Patriot course, and they did an outstanding job of slowing the course where it needed it while still making a heck of a lot of fun. In the M5 I almost touched the rev limiter in 3rd gear (>100mph) down the hill on the one main straight prior to a offset box before the corner.

Anyway, don't totally write-off a properly setup autox course on the Patriot course. If it is done right, the course is more fun than any we normally run due to the elevation and camber changes. Either way, the Patriot Course is a lot of fun to me since it is so very challenging to really drive it to best extent possible.
