I think I found a new best friend! 8)

A real 914/6 $$$ or 914/4 + 6 transplant has been one of my dream cars for years. Of course I had been thinking of an easier route on the engine side and doing something like a 2.4L instead of a larger 2.7 or 3.0. But I also wasn't thinking SM but more like track and/or fast street car.

Before I moved here the club I was in had a handful of real 914/6s. One of my most memorable rides is in one that had a 2.7 transplanted into it.

A 74 914/4 used to be my daily driver for nearly four years when I was in college. I miss that car.

That'll put you at close to 20K by the time you finish!! $3-4000 for rust free car, $4500 for conversion pieces (tin, oil tank, exhaust, etc.), another $4500 for a decent used 80k mile 3.0, $4000 in Carrera suspension and brakes, plus shocks, sway bars, etc. and this is all assuming you do the labor yourself! Better to buy one already converted for .50 on the dollar.

I'd love to do the conversion to mine, but think my $$ is better spent planning for my children's college tuition. Looks like my 914 will stay a 4 next year and with suspension mods play in the CSP ranks.

How on earth can you spend $1000 on headwork for a stock class car.
Scott

Depends on the motor and how much work you do yourself. It cost us 600.00 to have the valves shimmed on the Celi, and that wasn't even taking the head off the motor or machine work.

Of course, if you *had* taken the head off and dropped it off at T-Hoff they would have shimmed it to whatever specs you wanted for under $100.

They did my old head (not unlike a 1ZZ, except it was 8 valve) for $40, and that included figuring out what shims to use (you can't just buy 18RG shims, you have to measure and match to a US brand - Jaguar in my case). Shimming the solid lifter Toyota's is really a breeze with a set of feeler gauges and a little time. It's just a daunting task since the cams have to come out.

Since Jim is talking about a head already off the car, it really is straight forward.

YMMV

Does anybody know if all the 318i's are listed on the same line as far as street prepared goes? According to Moutons, it appears they are. Anybody with a rule book handy that could check that out for me?

If they are, could you take an early lightweight 318i like Whitney mentioned earlier and make a decent FSP car out of it? Anybody seen anything like that running around? Swap in a motor from a later, more powerful 318i and would you have a potential contender?

What you have to decide is whether you want a proven winner or whether you want to gamble on building something you think will win. It's your decision, but I'm pretty willing to bet you can do the former far cheeper than the latter. There's far less... "Well, we're testing our 4th part X and still haven't found what really works on the car." and far more "Hey, Jim... what's the best part X for an MR2?" But if the real fun is in building the car, the latter would be the way for you to go, but don't count on it being compeditive in it's class when you're done. (Or coming in under budget.)

Jim had you thought of an early Gen 1 Cavalier Hatchback. I believe they'll run in FSP(check this) and they have tons of engine UD/BD available. The Gen one was available in 5 different bodystyles at one point. That'd be far less money than 8k too. Shocks might be your only Issue.

However the STS car I've been thinking about is a Geo Storm GSi not a Firefly/Swift. They can whip a Civic of the same generation and have less weight than say Aaron's car. So they're a good comprimise between power and weight. Lotus even used the chassis as the basis for the Elan S4 and used a turbocharged version of the Impulse RS motor. I'd own one right now actually but I can't afford to autox and get into roadracing at the same time. Another option on that same car line is the Impulse XS that has a 160 HP turbo engine for STS class. :o They tilt the scales at about 2450ish pounds to the Storms 2350ish. Problem with these cars is the lack of development, you'll have to fabricate alot of stuff yourself or get it made.

How about a 75 Scirocco for SM, drop in a hot rodded 16v or G60. DYK that a Scirocco derives it's name from the hot desert winds of the northern Sahara that originate over Libya. How cool is that :!:

Why not a shifter kart they are cheap, and you raced them when you were 4 so you have experience :D .

Another option would be a F500 car. They are uber reliable and can be roadraced and autoxed. An Invader QC-1 which is a top car can be had used for 10-5k sometimes with trailer and can be towed with a normal vehicle.

Just some more of my silly thoughts though .

I didn't wanna be the first to hint on a VW, but well, there you go. Early chassis (A1) cars can easily have bigger and better motors dropped in and they'll be super light. Tons of aftermarket available for them too. You could also make me look REAL bad and get a g60 corrado (about 2500 lbs, 160HP stock) tune out the motor and suspension. I have a vr6 corrado that I love, but the extra weight in the front makes understeer more prominent than in other models.

But that's all assuming you don't mind a FWD car...

You can toss good money after bad or go with a proven car. Here is a good example located in Raleigh:

Quote:
F/S 93 N/A MR2
I have a red 93 mr2 N/A for sale. I am the 3rd owner with most of its history documented by previous owners.

123,000 miles
5spd (new clutch)
Sunroof
All Power Options
Cruise Control
AM/FM Cassette Player
New Tires

Most Major Maintenace records like
Timing Belt
Radiator Replacement
Brake Replacement

Needs new parking brake cables
Needs New antenna mast

Perfect Interior. It Runs and drives perfect. The paint has a ok shine to it, there is slight fading of the horizontal painted surfaces (common on ALL red mr2’s with original paint), most noticeably on the spoiler. Difficult to notice the fading from 3 or so feet away, buffing may help. All original paint except for some local touch up on the driver rear quarter panel... not due to accident because panel is clean from behind. See pictures at
http://community.webshots.com/user/leaguestr100

I need a 4 seater
$5,000 b/o

thanks
Chris

I do not know this car nor the owner. But to paraphrase Diane, trying to build a car and then trying to run at the national level at the same time is futile.

I saw that car a few days ago. Very intriguing... I'm just thinking out loud more than anything right now. While going with a proven winner is the smartest thing to do and probably what I'll end up doing, I'm just feeling out the possibilities. And I hate being a lemming to a certain degree. :D

Who knows, the guy looking at the Miata this weekend might decide he doesn't want it. Given the puddle of drool on the ground the last time he saw and rode in it, not likely but you never know. He does have his wife to convince so he ultimately may get vetoed.

Heck, I think I've owned most of the major car brands at one time or another so with the exception of a Toyota or a Subaru so it might be time to mark one of those off the list. The Toyota, not the Subaru. :P

Jim

- who still can't believe he recently marked "Plymouth" off the list...

The smartest thing to do is co-drive a proven winner :)

Hey dude, don't dis' my Plymouth! American all the way!!! :)

So does that mean I technically scratched Eagle and Mitsubishi off the list in one fell swoop?

'Cause it's a Plymouth for gods sake! :P Seriously, I'm just using that as my street car and don't really want to race it. While it would be fun to harass you and Vincent in ESP or Les in STX next year, I would like to get something I know (or at least think) will have a little bit more national potential.

"If anyone is interested in purchasing a 1988 Porsche 924S (SE) I have one for sale. The price is quite negotiable (asking mid 4k range) and the car is available with everything needed for solo II (extra wheels, harness bar, manual, etc). It has the M 756 package (M 030 minus power goodies..essentially) and is in excellent mechanical condition with some minor cosmetic flaws (pics available upon request). It has approximately 107k miles, with nearly $4k of work done to freshen the car (clutch/motor/timing belt). The car was good enough to finish 2nd in ProSolo and Solo II National Championships in the hands of a newbie to National level autocross (1997). It is arguably the easiest car to drive at 10/10ths...that I have experienced. Please pass this on to any who may be interested in a very good and reasonably priced autocrosser/track car. Thanks.
